In Logan West Virginia thirteen coal miners were recovered after a weeklong search for eighteen trapped by fire and fumes. Rescue crews found the bodies in two groups amid rotting timbers near three refuge areas.
Ronald Thompson presents a master plan concept to Butte Exchange Club as Veazey and others outline goals to measure public opinion before hearings. Officials note sites are small and advise pre earmarking land to secure affordable school locations amid ongoing development. Thompson emphasizes citizen participation for plan implementation and economic diversification.
East Montana expects considerable cloudiness with scattered snow on Wednesday and Thursday and cooler conditions. Western Montana sees cloudiness and scattered snow mainly in mountains with mild temperature change.
Montana's Railroad Commission denied the Great Northern Railway's request to discontinue passenger service between Butte and Great Falls via Helena. The order found Nos. 235 and 236 operated at a loss, but overall GN freight and passenger service over the 342 mile round trip remained profitable. The commission noted GN’s four year pre-application earnings and 1958 net earnings exceeded national Class One averages, and that the 600 horsepower Budd car diesel service would continue to serve major communities.
Three Glendive oil transport officials Harold Zimmerman Ray Bernhardt and Lyol Cysewski were killed when their four place Beech craft crashed near Drummond. A rancher witness Claude Mentzer saw the plane spin like a maple leaf and catch fire. one body was found dismembered nearby. A wristwatch fixed the time of crash at 1 10. The men were en route to Spokane to meet Al Houck.
The 24th annual Montana Retail Lumbermen’s Association convention closed after a banquet Tuesday night awarding two honors. Butte’s Jack Flanery received the Outstanding Lumber Dealer of the Year award from the Montana Building Salesmen’s Assn. Dwight Hughes of Missoula earned The Silver Log as Outstanding Supplier Salesman. Charles Lovell of Missoula was elected MRLA group president with officers named including Chan Sorenson, A. A. Kind, R. V. Peterson, and Robert J. Lawrence.
About 100 Republican county chairmen and campaign workers from ten counties will attend a Saturday workshop at the Finlen Hotel in Butte. Helena Republicans including state chairman Mel Engles and Helen Johnson of Bozeman will join as organizers and speakers.
Gov Hatfield bypassed Sen Neuberger’s widow and named Hall S Lusk to fill the unexpired Oregon Senate term. Lusk, 76, long time Oregon Supreme Court member, is a Democrat, though the predecessor was a Democrat. The move drew sharp criticism from Rep Charles O Porter and follows Hatfield’s prior stance not to name an active candidate.
Larry Lorderwell was found guilty of first degree murder in the slaying of Pearl Putney a 72 year old Washington widow. The jury will reconvene to decide the sentence which could be the death penalty or life imprisonment.
A helicopter rescued five survivors from a snowbound 11 000 foot peak in Ely Nevada after a light plane crash. The group included 6 year old Randy Cumbie and his grandmother Mrs Helen Stoddard. Two skiers aided the search team and helped transport the injured to safety.
A West German air force transport with six noncommissioned officers on board vanished Tuesday during a freight flight from Neubiberg Bavaria to Turin Italy.

South Korea reelects 84 year old Syngman Rhee to a fourth term amid a bloody election aftermath. Reports say 7 to 11 people killed in Masan and surrounding areas as official returns show Rhee ahead of rivals and his running mate leading the vice presidency race.
The Associated Press reports hundreds of Black protesters were jailed in Orangeburg and Atlanta after mass demonstrations against segregation. Tear gas and hoses were used in Orangeburg, with 350 arrested. Atlanta saw 79 arrests across multiple sites with no violence. Other cities including Columbia and Rock Hill also reported arrests during coordinated actions.
A jury found Arthur Holmstrom, a Butte grocer, guilty of selling beer to a minor. Judge Seton fined Holmstrom $200 and ordered 30 days in jail, with an appeal bond set at $400. The case followed the conviction of two 17 year olds for illegal possession linked to the same store run by Holmstrom and his wife at the corner of Oregon avenue and Cobban street.
A Northern Ireland police border patrol was ambushed and fired upon Tuesday with no injuries. A police spokesman said the gunfire came from the Irish Republic side amid ongoing IRA related border incidents and reunification tensions.
