France reports Vietminh forces smashed through northern defenses and pressed toward the fortress heart. French troops, tanks, and planes counterattacked after a dawn assault, claiming heavy Vietminh losses while reinforcing the Dien Bien Phu position 175 miles west of Hanoi.
