A severe lightning and wind storm swept Montana Thursday evening with gusts to 50 mph. Helena suffered a three hour blackout as power lines failed amid intense strikes and blizzard conditions.
A blizzard and lightningstorm struck the Butte area from 6:30 to 8 p m with winds shifting from 15 mph to a 50 mph northwest gale. Temperatures fell from 42 to 26 and precipitation measured 0.10 inch. Thunderstorms and snow affected Great Falls and Helena. Boulder hill Helena and McDonald pass suffered the worst. Highway crews sanded curves and patrolmen guided traffic. later passes required chains. Airlines canceled or rerouted flights. snow slicked city streets but no major injuries reported. A separate bolt hit East Helena’s smelter yard, igniting a fire on a power pole powering Helena, causing a city blackout for 2 hours 59 minutes until service was restored by a floating line. Cities including Marysville Lincoln Mullan tunnel area Alhambra Boulder Jefferson Canyon Ferry also went dark.
Washington March 15 The House armed services committee backs a bill draftng youths at 18 and establishes universal training later An amendment by Rep Winstead would let draftees choose segregated or nonsegregated units this choice to be respected as far as military necessity allows The vote on the amendment was 21 to 12 The bill differs from the Senate version and awaits conference committee action
Butte's Red Cross drive is $11000 short of the $24000 goal as campaign workers push to finish the appeal by month end. Through Thursday contributions reached $13041.50, not counting downtown booth reports. Booths opened Thursday under Navy Mothers' club and will run with Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliaries staffing. Locations include Burrs Hennessys Penneys stores, Montana Power, Finlen hotel lobbies, and a Granite street Safeway booth Saturday. Washington reports require 400 additional workers for military service and many volunteers for domestic and overseas Red Cross posts.
Senator Fulbright accused Republicans of political maneuvering as they press for RFC loan policy scrutiny. Bricker Thye and others demanded full disclosure, linking testim ony to Boyle and Dawson and arguing the inquiry should uncover truth beyond partial findings before the 1952 elections.
An Indianapolis taxpayer tried to earmark his income tax payment by attaching a memorandum to his return stating Not to be used for mink coats, etc. Internal revenue agents reported the note appeared to curb misuse of funds.
Billings faces a state imposed rabies emergency as up to 20 infected dogs threaten residents. Beginning Friday, any dog or cat at large will be shot on sight and compulsory vaccination will start across Yellowstone County with veterinarians donating services. Serum from Pearl River arrives Friday to aid the drive amid an estimated 3000 dogs in the county.
Partly cloudy and windy in Butte with cooler temperatures. Friday highs 30 to 40, lows near 16. Airport readings Thursday to Friday show 15 to 45 degrees, with School of Mines bounds 27 to 49. West of Divide 30 to 40, East of Divide colder with snow flurries.
The Defense Department reported seven Montana service members among Army and Marine casualties in Korea. Wounded: Pfc Edward Bezanson Hamilton Mt, Pfc Edward Nulliner Great Falls, and Elwood Erickson Billings. Missing: Pfc George Kline Inverness and Pvt Norman Scheid Terry. Lt Ronald Rice Great Falls wounded seriously after two Feb 28 hits near Wonju. Corp Leland Peterson Scobey killed Jan 12 near Manchurian border after evacuation at Inchon.
Seventy beardless boys, most 17 or younger, who falsified ages to join the Army in Korea, arrive aboard the Gen. H. B. Freeman in Seattle. The 65 minorities discharged will resume civilian life. they come from 25 states.
Economic Stabilizer Eric Johnston seeks a new wage stabilization board representing labor industry and public to avert a system crisis. A planned united labor policy committee meeting with CIO Parking House Workers failed as members were away, delaying talks on board scope amid wage dispute resistance.
Emmett Buckley a native of MONTANA and assistant land and tax commissioner for Montana Power was elected exalted ruler of Butte Ridge No 240 BPOE. Other officers elected included Clyde Carpino and Thomas Rogers, with a dance program by Frankie Reardon’s School of Dance.
Advancing allied forces pressed the central Korea front Friday facing intensified Chinese artillery east and west of Hongchon where the Reds retreated to a line along the Hongchin river. U N troops seized Hongchon from Communist forces, with U S First Cavalry and Second Division units driving north and bayonet fighting Reds north of Yudong. Casualties mounted as Reds faced heavy air and naval bombardment, while Hongchon lay in ruins with only five civilians found among the rubble.
A second Operation Draftee Airlift carried 65 Montanans from Butte to Fort Lewis Washington aboard two large airliners. The flight aimed to expedite processing of new soldiers with a three hour trip ending at McChord Field. One volunteer and 64 draftees traveled under a United Airlines and West Coast Airlines contract.
The Office of Price Stabilization announces ceilings on cattle hides kips and calfskins at November average levels. Officials say the move should keep prices roughly unchanged and unlikely to affect shoe prices. The order revises a January freeze ruling that tied prices to each seller’s November peak.
Former President Herbert Hoover reveals in Collier's memoirs that he declined Gov. Thomas E. Dewey's offer to appoint him U S Senator from New York to fill the Wagner vacancy. Hoover, 76, said he wished to keep independence from political harness and favor a younger man. Governor Dewey then named John Foster Dulles.
Frank Costello walked out of the Senate crime investigating committee hearing and refused to testify further. Chairman Estes Kefauver warned of contempt, noting Costello remains under subpoena and could face arrest if recalled.
Hiram R. Gale, 104, former commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, died at American Lake veterans hospital near Seattle after 26 months of illness. A Union Army corporal, he led GAR from 1945 and was the last of Washington state’s boys of 61.
