President Nixon announced a $6 to $7 billion antimissile system shifting focus from city protection to defending the U S missile bomber force. The plan calls for two Sentinel sites near bases at first and aims to deter Soviet strikes, prompting a sharp Senate debate and mixed support.
Residents in northern Montana including Shelby and nearby towns welcome a Nixon plan to base part of the ABM system 50 to 100 miles north of Malmstrom Air Force Base. Local officials report little opposition, mainly concerns over land payments. Minuteman II modernization continues, with work due to finish this May.
Variably cloudy conditions expected through Sunday with a high near 35 and a low around 5. Isolated showers are unlikely. A year ago temperatures were 44 and 27.
Montana lawmakers in both parties signaled a likely Monday adjournment as leaders near a budget balancing plan. A fourth session was set for Saturday to finalize refined points with broad agreement on appropriations and school budgeting schedules and revenue measures.

On the 60th and last lawful day of Montana's 41st Legislature the $227.9 million highway use appropriation HB 603 and the $10.9 million HB 594 were misplaced in a secretary's desk drawer. The conference-reported bills failed enrollment and Senate action, leaving crucial funding unsigned.

Chicago's police department closed its inquiry with penalties for 41 men of which 35 were suspended from duty two to 30 days and six face dismissal proceedings. Two resigned during the inquiry and three of the four officers charged with use of force against a reporter faced additional actions.
The Treasure State Spelling Bee in Anaconda will draw 59 contestants from the Butte area. Six finalists advance to the state bee in Billings on May 3, with the state winner heading to Washington DC for the National Spelling Bee in June.
Janet Woldstad of Missoula Hellgate High School was named state tournament queen amid eight competing schools. Also named were Butte Central representative Julie Powers and Anaconda High School princess Margie Blaz.
Craig Harris 22 a Deer Lodge native killed March 11 near Da Nang after arriving to serve as a hospital corpsman. Born December 17 1946 he lived in Deer Lodge for years and was a Powell County High School graduate. Survivors include wife Sandra Danville Iowa parents Lewis and Harris Wyola brothers Douglas Bozeman Scott Wyola sister Sheila Wyola. Arrangements pending Beck Funeral Home Deer Lodge.
Apollo 9 astronauts Russell Schweickart David Scott and their two veteran spacefliers Gordon Cooper and Walter Schirra arrived at Ellington Air Force Base amid cheers from about 200 fans and families. McDivitt praised the homecoming as a big step for mankind and Schweickart said there is no place like home as crowds dispersed.
