Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield faced charges from Rep. Francis Bardanouve that he abandoned statesman duties and politically meddled in Montana by dangling a federal incentive to aid Montana Tech in Butte. The Harlem rancher, head of the Appropriations Committee, urged accountability during the budget hearing.
The Senate Finance Committee backed a $31.5 billion tax cut plan with a $2,000 home buyers credit and a 5 percent deduction cap for principal residences. The City of Butte will receive 150000 in federal funds to add 50 workers through June 30. The money funds tree pruning park cleanups and sewer and canal projects with screening by the Montana State Employment Service.
In exchange of letters North Vietnam reveals it holds information about Americans listed as missing in Southeast Asia. Senator Kennedy says the development is hopeful but urges timely release to families, while warning no progress on humanitarian access without broader U.S. policy changes.
A nine woman three man jury was sworn in to hear the first trial over alleged theft from the Montana Workmen's Compensation Division. Judge Bennett recessed after seating the jury and set Friday aside for motions. Defendants Lavon Bretz and Merril Cline face a $5400 fraud claim involving a submitted Wire claim. jury selection was paused to consider removing one defendant.
