Bullets wound Butte boy 14 in accidental shooting

A 14-year-old Butte youth was treated for gunshot wounds after an accidental shooting at the Nadine Chapman residence. The 8-year-old Chapman suspect told the babysitter the rifle went off as someone in the yard approached. Harry Adams, 442 Mile Vue, was in good condition at the hospital. Deputies cited the incident as accidental and ongoing.

Telephone workers seek 25 percent wage hike in nationwide talks

AFL-CIO Communications Workers Union opens bargaining aims for about 500000 Bell System employees. President Beirne says a 25 percent rise could be justified as contracts expire nationwide next month. In 1968 the union won a 19.5 percent package after an 18 day strike amid inflation concerns.

Soviets Withdraw Missiles as Egypt Controls Canal

Senate leader Mike Mansfield said Soviet troops pulled back from surface to air missile sites along the Suez Canal leaving advisers in place and Egyptian forces in charge. He warned against U.S. troops in a Middle East peacekeeping role though backing UN led forces with smaller nations. State Dept signaled readiness to join a multinational force. Montana hotels win reprieves on fire safety upgrades

The Montana State Board of Health granted provisional licenses to the Placer Hotel in Helena the Florence Hotel in Missoula and the Hotel Bozeman in Bozeman with orders to fix fire exits and other hazards. Thirty five other hotels received conditional licenses while A 90 day extension was given to the Finlen Hotel in Butte as it ends transient operations. The board postponed action on the Placer Hotel license and cautioned concrete progress by May.

Strangler given life for Laporte murder in Quebec

Paul Rose, 27, a schoolteacher and FLQ member, was sentenced to life for the strangling of Quebec Labor Minister Pierre Laporte. He proclaimed Quebec independence from the courtroom. Three accomplices— Jacques Rose, Francis Simard, and Bernard Lortie—face murder charges and await trial. their case ties to the FLQ kidnapping and murder plot.

Falls murder suspect arrested in Great Falls case

A 21 year old Seattle man Michael Duane Stillings was charged with murder in the death of 14 year old Vicky Agnes Renville whose bruised body was found west of Great Falls. Stillings was arrested in Seattle and held awaiting extradition.
