Severe winds in northwest Reno up to 90 miles per hour damaged houses and roofs. An eight year old boy, Mark Hershberger, was killed in the destruction.
In the central highlands a Viet Cong ambush on a U.S. convoy near Pleiku was repelled by air supported South Vietnamese units. The clash left 12 Americans dead and 48 enemy fighters killed, with convoy damage moderate. Earlier shellings hit two air fields and three allied positions as a broader fighting wave continued near Gio Linh.
Helena AP Stephenson chief of patrol will resign April 1 to run for state treasurer. He has led the Montana Highway Patrol since 1956 after a long career starting in 1937 and rising to director of safety and education. He is 59, married, with one son. Yellowstones County treasurer Opal Eggert also seeks the GOP nomination and James Palma filed for the Democratic nomination on Feb 23.
Bart Hopkins, 11, of Gallatin Gateway, earned a National Court of Honor Heroism Medal for saving Donna Morrison, 11, from Madison River in December 1966 after she fell through ice. Dist. Scout Executive Ernest Loy noted Hopkins, then 10, pulled the girl to safety. Hopkins is the son of Chuck and (Mrs.) Hopkins of Bozeman.
Washington AP report states Navy Hospital Corpsman Chief Patrick D. Moriarty husband of Mary J. Moriarty of Billings Montana was killed in action in Vietnam as announced by the Defense Department on Wednesday.
New York AP report says Richard Nixon frames his campaign pledge to end the war in Vietnam as a duty for the next president. He insists the promise is a concrete pledge, not a mere campaign device, as he pushes through Wisconsin after the New Hampshire win.
Partly cloudy forecast for Butte-Anaconda with snow showers likely in mountains tonight and Friday. Highs around 42 and lows near 22, with snow chances rising to about 40 percent tonight.

Louie Beland Jr. a 45 year old rancher in Riverside County has a 40 acre spread piled with cars stoves boxes oil drums trucks buses nuts and bolts and thousands of other items. Officials gave five years to clear the site after a neighbor filed a complaint. Beland calls it a hobby and a deputy notes the scale is unusual.
The NLRB charged 26 copper industry unions in Salt Lake City with failing and refusing to bargain in good faith in U S District Court. The action signals a serious enforcement move by federal labor officials.
The Commerce Department eased refined copper delivery limits, permitting civilian shipments after defense needs are met. The move follows a longshoremen threat and a walkout that has halted most U.S. copper production since July, while NLRB and White House efforts to resolve the strike continue amid stalled negotiations with Kennecott and other majors.
