An aftershock at 8:33 p m adds to the quake toll in Los Angeles as homeless residents face disease risk from water and sanitation problems. United relief agencies mobilize with first aid hospitalization food distribution and reconstruction as the 35th major shock rattles the city about 34 hours after the initial blast.
Vatican sources say Pope Pius will sharply condemn King Boris and Queen Giovanna of Bulgaria in a morning allocution to cardinals during the holy year consistory. The Pontiff will denounce the orthodox baptism of Princess Maria Luisa born in January and will discuss the world situation in a near hour long address.
An eight team invitational high school basketball tourney will be held at the School of Mines gym Friday and Saturday. Participating schools include Livingston Bozeman Miles City Havre Anaconda Butte and Butte Central with Great Falls expected to confirm. The event is organized by the Butte Chamber of Commerce athletic committee and Miles City approved by the state board of control.
Secretary Woodin issued night orders to resume operations of federal and private banks, Reconstruction Finance Corp and agricultural credit bodies. Gold control remains tight with a 30 day delivery demand of gold or certificates to the government. Federal Reserve branches to open and conduct normal functions.
Stevensville reports Nell Ball, formerly of Stevensville, killed in the Bellflower California quake. She left with husband Frank Ball about 12 years ago for California. Harold Metcalf, once Stevensville bank cashier, and Lawrence R. Peck, who organized Victor bank, are Bellflower bank officials. No word yet from them.
In Berlin on March 11 two American men suffered assaults during Nazi turmoil. Julian Puhs of New York, a musician, was beaten by men in Nazi uniforms demanding money while a storm troop leader alerted police. Herman Roseman of Brooklyn, a medical student at Berlin University, was attacked leaving a department store. he showed his passport but police did not intervene.
Long Beach reports 50 deaths from the earthquake, with 47 identified and three remain unknown. Deputy Coroner Arthur Donlin explains misidentifications caused duplicate listings, and officials prepared city by city tallies. Identified names include Stanley Taylor, Fred B. Cole, Mrs. Millie Herman, Mrs. Pearl Miller, Charles B. Wright, Frank Lee McCarthy, and Howard T. Kennedy.
Berlin reports that Hitler's Nazi party swept municipal and communal Prussian elections. Many opposition voters abstained. President Hindenburg issued a decree restoring the imperial flag and making the Swastika official as the black white and red emblem flies at half mast for war dead.
Victor Smith, 19, aiming to beat Amy Johnson Mollison’s London to Capetown record, arrived in Walfish Bay South Africa and stood 10 hours ahead of Mollison’s time. Mollison's record stands at four days, six hours, and 55 minutes for the 6,200 mile flight.

President Roosevelt faces a hostile congress yet is forecast to win passage of his measure to cut more than 500 million dollars in government costs. Senate leaders expect approval Tuesday or Wednesday with bipartisan support, as Republicans and Democrats back the proposal to reduce veterans benefits and federal salaries.

A six room house owned by Mr and Mrs Harry Fisher on Watson avenue 1800 block was destroyed by fire early yesterday. Firefighters using buckets and garden hoses prevented spread to nearby structures while spectators watched. The Fisher family was away at the time. A separate small fire on Iowa avenue 1300 block was extinguished by the crew with undetermined origin.
Denver dated March 12 reports B C Reeves accepting an old time 50 cent bill printed in 1866 as payment for a haircut. The unusual currency note surfaced amid financial stringency as older money reappears in daily trade.
President Roosevelt pledges there will be no more epidemics of bank failures and urges unity to banish fear. He explains the modified bank holiday and the stagger reopening starting tomorrow, assuring depositors banks will meet needs and that keeping money in reopened banks is safer than under the mattress. The statement notes possible withdrawals as banks resume.
Governor Erickson issued a proclamation amending the March 4 bank holiday to allow banks in Montana to reopen for normal banking only with license from federal authorities or the state superintendent of banks for non member banks. Frank H. Johnson said banks will follow Federal Reserve member restrictions and a banking conference with over twenty bankers was scheduled for tomorrow.
Pi A Rengo dispatch from Chinchow Manchuria reports Maj. Gen. Heijiro Hattori’s 14th Japanese brigade repelling a full day of Chinese attack at Hsi fengkou pass Great Wall. Chinese reinforcements failed to retake the pass after Japanese victory toward Jehol City. Indications grow Japanese may cross the Great Wall to smash concentrations south of the boundary.
