Five inches of fresh snow blanketed Butte overnight causing slick roads and travel delays on Friday. Traffic moved slowly and several businesses on West Park Street faced closures or reduced activity as crews cleared snow. Local officials urged caution for motorists and pedestrians.
The Montana House revived ExHB 31 a two year study of the Public Instruction Department led by Harriet Miller and denied Democratic efforts to remove a school financing bill from floor debate. The revival 57 to 42 included cross party votes with Republicans backing the move and Democrats resistant citing a need to keep the measure in committee until funds are analyzed.
The U S Navy C47 crash near Saigon killed at least 25 Americans with 55 wounded as US jets fought MIGs and bombed North Vietnam. Thunderchief pilots claimed several MIGs shot down in a day of heavy air combat and industrial bombardment.
In a Friday session of the Butte federal court Judge W D Murray granted nine people American citizenship at the Federal Building. Among new citizens were Laszlo Dudas and his wife Charlotte of Anaconda both originally from Hungary and their three children Eleftheria James and John Xanthopoulos. Also sworn were Wilfred L Roset and Leila of Anaconda from Saskatchewan and John A Jamieson and Margret Jamieson from Nova Scotia now residing in Butte. Immigration examiner Gerald L Crowley of Helena oversaw the proceedings.
Dr Ignacio de la Fuentes of the 20th of November Hospital reports a 21 year old woman gave birth to eight babies in a small clinic in a poor area. Four boys and four girls were born two months early two died soon after birth and the remaining six are in critical condition. The parents Maria Teres Lopez de Sepulveda and Gener Sepulveda, 27, also have a 3 year old daughter. The doctor said survival is unlikely.
Arctic air brings heavy snow to eastern Divide slopes and icy roads across Great Falls Lewistown Livingston Helena and Butte. Chains required for trucks and towing units as motorists face winter storm conditions with Bozeman spared and temperatures near zero. Snow to continue through Saturday then fade to flurries Sunday with a warming trend not until Wednesday.
Gov. Tim Babcock reluctantly signs the feed bill approving 150000 for the extra legislative session in Montana. He warns he will not support further winter session expansion. The move allows payments to 159 lawmakers and staff as negotiators seek a revenue plan to end the stalemate.
Silver Bow County Atty. Mark Sullivan urged the Board of County Commissioners to revise dealings with Hammond-Everly Engineering Co over Metro Sewer District fees. Sullivan called for a line item budget, a written amended contract, and hold on payments until costs align with the contract and public funds.
Dr Vezio O Ungherini longtime Butte physician dies in a local hospital. He lived at 1035 W Platinum and retired two years ago after nearly 50 years of practice. An Italian native, he graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School and interned at Columbus Hospital in Chicago. He served in the Army during World War I and began practice in Butte in 1919. He was a mom.
