Major Fire Evacuates Lincoln Mental Hospital

Nearly 400 patients at Lincoln State Mental Hospital were evacuated as a long fire raged through the old main building. Dr. F H Spradling said 25 staff helped evacuate in about 15 to 20 minutes with some patients assisting. Eight wards housed 385 patients as fire crews battled above, with sprinklers likely knocked out by heat. Three firefighters were slightly injured. one patient broke an arm during evacuation. Caril Ann Fugate was not in the building.

Billings Man Killed in Railroad Crossing Crash

John Michalies, 52, of Billings, died after his stalled car was hit by Great Northern Train No 43 three miles west of Billings. The crash hurled the car 30 feet and threw Michalies about 25 feet onto a right of way fence. State police and railroad personnel investigated as the 1958 Montana toll rose to 34.

Peruvian Official Tops Senator in Saber Duel Near Lima

In Lima a government minister, Jorge Fernandez Stoll, defeated Senator Protacna Wilson Sologuren in a brief saber duel. The exchange ended when the minister slashed the senator’s right wrist forearm and face. Fernandez was slightly cut. Wilson Sologuren had issued a letter about two brothers’ jailing, which prompted the challenge. They left the field unreconciled.

Two Tennessee Deputies Slain in Ambush

Three Polk county deputy sheriffs were ambushed on patrol near Copperhill Tennessee on Saturday night. Louis Wright and Bob Rogers were killed by shotgun fire between Copperhill and Turtletown. Carmel Gibson was pinned down but escaped. Sheriff Bud Payne said the assailants’ identities were unknown. Deputy Pat Shelton described routine patrol as the deputies’ duty at the time.

Butte Snow Storm Causes Hazardous Travel and Injuries

A three inch snowfall and subfreezing temperatures closed roads and prompted chains use in the western region. An elderly man, Jako Skuletich, was injured when a car skidded into him at Montana and Porphyry in Butte. He required stitches and hospital observation as driving remained hazardous and several minor fender benders were reported.

Red Korea Agrees To Return Pilot After Violation Admitted

North Korea will return U S Air Force Captain Leon Pfeiffer of Kenosha Wisconsin who parachuted into North Korea after his Sabre jet was shot down in the demilitarized zone. The UN Command confirmed charges that Pfeiffer and Lt Ronald Martin of Rock Hill Missouri violated the truce zone but opposed the shelling as an unnecessary armed attack.
