In Nicosia Cyprus British authorities banished Archbishop Makarios III as a dangerous rebel and tightened control on the island. Defiant Greek Cypriots respond with violence amid the crackdown.
U S officials voiced deep concern over the deteriorating Britain Greece relationship amid the Cyprus dispute. Greece recalls ambassador to London as British actions against Archbishop Makarios trigger protests and security incidents across Nicosia and Athens.
Algerian nationalists led a riot in Paris, clashing with helmeted police as they marched on the National Assembly to push Premier Mollet’s demand for wider powers in Algeria. A Friday strike crippled factories, and police seized about 2,300 Algerians for questioning along with weapons and leaflets echoing Mesalli Hadj.
Representatives of the City Council met in Helena with the State Board of Examiners to explore funding street and alley work beyond the approved budget. An emergency resolution could authorize excess expenditures with a unanimous council vote if warranted by unforeseen conditions from the harsh winter.

William C. Knofel, 33, grand larceny suspect, fled county jail custody late Friday from deputy Philip Brogan on Alaska Street. Keith Johnson, seeing the chase, tackled Knofel until Brogan arrived. Knofel had earlier escaped the Butte city jail with John Bruno and was recaptured in Idaho. The latest charge accuses him of stealing a rifle from Sears Roebuck in Butte on February 7 valued at $94.50, and he has a prior Yellowstone County felony. The case connects to the 1954 Quong On murder probe where a key witness Arnell Sumpter was not located. He was awaiting arraignment with court-appointed counsel.
Beginning today through April 10 the 1956 Easter Seal appeal for the Montana Society for Crippled Children will be conducted. Campaign chair Jim Daniel notes that over 90 percent of contributions stay in Silver Bow County to aid hundreds of local handicapped children. Fred N. Dugan of Billings says a $75,000 1956 goal is needed to sustain current programs statewide.
Washington remarks indicate Senator McClellan may chair the bipartisan Senate lobbying inquiry committee formed February 23. The eight member panel seeks a broad probe of campaign contributions, lobbying, and improper influences on senate voting. Kennedy said a compromise was near and McClellan confirmed he was approached.
A 7-year-old Butte boy fought for an hour to save his infant brother from Bell Creek but Kelley Gene Ziegler, 2, died from drowning or exposure. Freddie Ziegler, 7, and friends pulled Kelley from three feet of water. Kelley died at St. James Hospital. Funeral services will be held in Salmon.
Montana east faces considerable cloudiness with scattered light snow and cold northerly winds. Highs near zero to 15 above in the south, continued cold overnight with scattered flurries southeast and south central. Montana west sees cloudiness, scattered light snow and strong northerly winds, highs 5 to 20 with cold nights. The Table records 12 hour maximums and 18 hour minimums ending 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Authorities say an overheated stove or possible explosion caused a deadly fire in a two room tarpa pered home in Oxford PA killing 12 members of the Twyman family. Fire officials reconstructed the scene noting a single door shack and beds crowded together with seven children in one bed. The fire killed wife Catherine Twyman 35 who was pregnant and involved the truck driver John Twyman returning home as rescuers were gathering the remains.
A mob in Tunis surged into the U S consulate and information office smashing furniture and throwing an American flag into the street. Damage to the consulate reached about 20000 dollars. No Americans were injured but one French student was killed and several others injured in clashes with police. Morris Hughes protested to Roger Seydoux who voiced government regrets. About 10000 French residents attended the funeral for two Frenchmen killed by Tunisian terrorists.
Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay filed Friday in Salem for the Republican nomination to Oregon’s U S Senate, setting up a key race against Senator Wayne Morse. McKay cited Eisenhower’s decision to run again as decisive, and noted White House endorsement after his announcement.
President Eisenhower won a farm bill battle as the Senate, in a 46-45 vote later recapitulated, struck down 90 percent price supports for wheat. Vice President Nixon cast the tiebreaking aye after a clerical error initially showed 46-45. The episode sparked a long parliamentary dispute with Sen. Gore challenging Nixon’s right to vote on ties and leaders defending the vice president’s parliamentary power.
Harold E. Stassen said the 1954 Paris trade conference gains may help the United States win the race to develop an intercontinental guided missile. He urged senators not to discount the net advantage from the conference while clashing with Sen. McClellan over allies pressuring trade. Weeks and Stassen maintained the agreement kept controls alive and yielded some gains, despite McClellan's sharper critique that the deal was not a gain.
In Missoula Montana a 5 month old girl died and Francis J Bischert and his wife face manslaughter charges. Deputy County Attorney Parker said the baby died about five hours before arrival at a mortuary where staff noticed burns sores and extreme emaciation. The couple and four other children were from a mill town area near Finntown West Riverside or Pine Grove. The state plans to place the other children with Welfare pending outcome of the case. The father reportedly earned 110 dollars weekly at a lumber plant.
