State employees to picket Capitol in protest over wages
Off duty workers from the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employes AFL-CIO will protest at the Capitol on Tuesday to press for higher salaries. Leader George Hammond says the one day event seeks face to face contact with legislators from workers' districts. A strike has been authorized at Deer Lodge Prison, Galen State Hospital, Boulder River School and Hospital, and Motor Vehicle Registrar's Office, with some highway workers joining. Hammond stresses the action is a protest not a slowdown or full walkout and expects demonstrations rather than large numbers.

Butte Honors Last Spanish War Veteran George H. Wilcox
George H. Wilcox, 92, of Country Club Manor, died at Ft. Harrison after a long illness. A private in Co B, 13th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, he served in the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection, including the Manila battle and actions at Black House and Marquina Road in 1899. Born December 14, 1874 in Houghton Michigan, he later mined in Nevada before settling in Butte. He was the last known surviving Spanish War veteran in Butte and served as senior vice commander and adjutant of Henry W. Lawton Camp No 1.
