The Senate approved an amendment to the $6 billion Viet Nam tax bill extending Social Security benefits to about 1.8 million more Americans. The surprise action came as the administration pressed to preserve the original measure.
President Johnson announced the unemployment rate fell to a 13 year low as the Labor Department reported 3.15 million jobless Americans in February, down 100000 from January. He urged vigilance over labor shortages that could push wages and prices higher and constrain growth.
U S planes flew hundreds of sorties in 53 missions during dawn to morning raids on North Viet Nam with B 52 strikes from Guam on a Viet Cong base near Saigon. Four planes were lost and ground forces reported 634 enemy dead in Operation Utah near Quang Ngai while allied casualties were light.
A district court jury found Leonard L. Lucero twenty one guilty of third degree assault a misdemeanor and sentenced him to six months in the county jail and a five hundred dollar fine. The verdict followed about seven hours of deliberation near 9 p m Tuesday. Lucero admitted punching Walter Carollo thirty nine but said he believed he was attacked by Carollo and Ralph Sletten forty eight. Judge James Freebourn ordered Lucero jailed immediately after the verdict and released a two thousand five hundred dollar bond posted last November. The East North Dakota sidewalk confrontation involved Carollo and Sletten who testified they were knocked out with Sletten later assaulted by Gary Hendricks nineteen. An assault charge against Hendricks is pending.
A Columbia University expert told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Communist China might intervene if North Viet Nam’s government seemed in danger. He urged de escalation and cautioned against aiming for broader war while noting uncertain troop builds.

Judge W. W. Lessley of Bozeman ruled in favor of Silver Bow County's Metro Sewer District against Tillie Duffy of Butte. He held the district is necessary to handle sewage volume and that the present system is inadequate, denying the injunction against further district activities.
Roy Sanders, 75, was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of first degree murder for the Aug. 5 shooting of Butte furniture dealer Robert Henningsen. Henningsen died Aug. 20. Sanders testified he had lost 35 pounds since his arrest and walked with a stoop as he left the courtroom.
Montana Highway Commission chair Alex Blewett Jr. rejected claims that a 1965 law reversed state policy requiring city participation in highway costs. He said the commission has not threatened Great Falls or other cities with curtailing work and favors programs easing local shares, noting Great Falls faces a 45 436 dollar bill for widening Central Avenue West.
Kiwanis clubs of Butte host a breakfast at Finlen Hotel honoring Edward C. Keefe of Oklahoma City, president of Kiwanis International. Keefe will speak at 8 15 am, then lunch in Helena with Montana Kiwanis leaders before a Michigan bound swing eastward. He is executive director of an Oklahoma college foundation.
Chester authorities probing a head on crash of two Great Northern passenger trains withheld an autopsy report on one killed engineer. At least 45 hurt, 14 still hospitalized. Sheriff coroner Remington and County Attorney Hunt cited ongoing investigation and possible inquest, with ICC review expected to reveal full facts.
Steve Elakovich owner of the Blue Bird Tavern in Rocker files for the Democratic nomination for a four year term on the board of commissioners. He is 62 and a native of Anaconda with past schooling at Valparaiso University and study of law. Vera O Connell the appointed incumbent widow of Dan O Connell has not filed but plans to run.
