Students are nominated by the school faculty and a faculty committee reviews qualifications before final selection. Faculty advisors for the new NHS members are Miss Helen Laird and Miss Ethel Blomgren. Miss Blomgren serves for Miss Burney Rice.
After the first week of the 1952 Red Cross drive in Butte, $7,345.50 is toward a $3,000 goal. Friday and Saturday returns boosted totals as drive chairman James A. Poore Jr. notes the campaign is one third complete. Mrs. John W. Cromer co chairs. Contributions flowed from Divide Melrose Twin Bridges and Boulder though not solicited there. The Red Cross plans extensive programs for wartime relief disaster service and nurses training amid a growing demand with 3,500,000 armed forces.
The 1952 Friendly Sons of St. Patrick banquet at the Finlen hotel on March 15 will showcase Dr. Carl McFarland, Rev. J. J. O Connor, Dave Holland, and James Bertoglio with R Bourke MacDonald as toastmaster. Dr. McFarland will speak on Christianity in Education. Msgr. English will deliver the invocation.
The Mining District Bar association holds its first annual meeting Thursday night March 13 at the Finlen hotel. District spans Madison Jefferson Beaverhead Deer Lodge Powell Granite and Silver Bow counties. A large attendance is expected for a 6 30 dinner in the Copper Bow. Discussion topics include group insurance minimum fee schedule and unlawful practice issues. Officers include J J McCaffery president Sigmund O Meyer secretary treasurer Don J Smith first vice president Michael Ruane J Chandice Ettien John M Comfort Joseph A McElwain Phil Duncan.
Mazie Henry testified Saturday in a divorce hearing that Daniel Henry was misrepresented as an ordained minister before their marriage. She said he became a numbers writer poker player heavy drinker and woman chaser and that he did not contest the suit.
Nevada Senator Pat McCarran endorsed Georgia Senator Richard B. Russell for the Democratic presidential nomination. He said he will work to secure Nevada’s support at the Democratic National Convention next July as Russell builds Southern backing amid Truman opposition. Charles Edison, former New Jersey governor, noted in Washington the cross-sectional backing for Russell.
The Supreme Soviet of Russia approved the largest peacetime military appropriation in the republics history. Budget chairman Korniyets said the measure "tests to a peaceful policy" as broadcast by Moscow radio reported from London.
Swiss guides at Kleine Scheidegg reached the wreckage of a U S Air Force C47 high in the Jungfrau Massif. They reported all eight aboard were killed when the plane struck an Alpine glacier and was buried under two feet of fresh snow after a small avalanche.
A special United States mission with a 100 million dollar bank roll will travel to Madrid in a few weeks to press General Franco for standby naval and air bases. The plan focuses on limited facilities rather than large bases, with emphasis on roads and harbor work, and arms policy tied to Franco's demands. The group, led by a military officer and including State Department personnel, seeks no two way military alliance.
Butte moves forward with its Futures Unlimited program as the $4 million Civic Center is dedicated at 8 p m on March 18. Civic Center commission chair W P Donnelly leads a board including Mayor Thomas R Morgan and Judge T E Downey. An open house is set for March 16 from noon to 7 pm with state officials led by Gov John W Bonner expected to attend.
The American Red Cross blood unit returns to Butte on Thursday at the Masonic temple ballroom from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donors aged 18 to 59 in good health are urged to give blood to aid Korea war casualties. Last visit yielded 615 pints from 670 volunteers. organizers aim for 300 pints this time. Call 9291 for appointments.
North Hollywood square dance authority Ralph Maxhimer will headline Butte’s third annual festival as guest master of ceremonies. Proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.
Arnold Schuster, 24, the Brooklyn salesman whose tip led to the arrest of Willie Sutton, was shot four times on a Brooklyn street near his home. He died instantly. a friend was with him as gunfire echoed through the quiet street. Police sought the gunman with no immediate leads.
General James A. Van Fleet says China and North Korea have about 900000 troops in Korea with more weapons and planes than the Allies. He notes about 450000 Reds are on the front lines and asserts the Allies can stop any attack, while preferring offensive actions like Rollup or Killer if not for armistice considerations.
In Munsan Korea on Sunday March 9 AP staff officers met for two minutes to set a brief conference record on truce supervision. They agreed to meet again Monday after brief exchanges and a recess. The Red demand to invite Russia to police the armistice fuels a major dispute.

Communist troops suffered nearly 2000 casualties in the first week of March as reported by the U S Eighth Army. The briefing officer gave totals of 1033 killed 920 wounded and 41 captured amid hazy conditions. Allied aircraft destroyed warehouses a locomotive and trucks while B 26 bombers struck supply trucks. Marine planes attacked the west coast destroying or damaging gun positions bunkers bridges and buildings. UN ships hit targets along the west coast up to Hungnam.
Two Butte men identified as Don Williams 29 of Oregon and Glen Sloan 22 of 30 East Mercury were in critical condition after their car left the highway near Toston. Townsend police said the Three Forks to Townsend vehicle rolled into a borrow pit, overturned, and was demolished. Parents were notified and left for Townsend.
