Legendary coach Merrifield dies at 90 in Butte
Butte High School track legend Charlie Merrifield died at 90 after a career spanning 1954 to 2022 in coaching and volunteering. He led Butte High to state titles in 1974 75 and 81 82 and mentored athletes across southwest Montana. He was inducted into the National HS Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Butte Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Survived by wife Betty.

In Yellowstone's harsh winter, state and federal teams remove bison remains from Gardiner Basin to a Gallatin County landfill. The joint effort by Montana livestock, Custer Gallatin NF, FWP, Shoshone Bannock Tribe, and USFWS used backhoes and skid-steers to haul gut piles hides and bones away after tribal and state hunters left carcasses along the landscape.
