President Kennedy urged steel industry negotiators and the United Steelworkers to renew talks by March 14. Union president David J. McDonald and company chief R. Conrad Cooper signaled readiness to meet, with discussions previously recessed since May 1.
Furious late winter storm churned up the Atlantic with flood tides and gale winds forcing thousands from their homes. Death toll about 40 as crews evacuated coastal residents without power in freezing temperatures from Florida to New England. Storm battered Outer Banks cutting off islands. Chincoteague residents on rooftops. Wallops Island underwater and evacuated. Coast Guard and National Guard aided distressed vessels. Virginia Beach estimated $15 million in damage. Continuous updates expected.
Butte City Council amended the garbage ordinance requiring all dwelling units to pay a 12 dollar yearly collection charge. Larger apartment houses remain exempt under the change. The amendment lets private households haul their own trash with no refunds unless paid under protest. Opponents in voting were Terry Kelly Pete Evankovich Pete Sodja Tom Carrig and Jim Burchell.
A Miles City man Louis Joseph Begger 27 burned to death four miles south of Lodge Grass when his semi struck a cow on the highway rolled into a borrow pit and burst into flames. Identification came from a wallet and a wrist watch. Fire crews from Crow Agency Lodge Grass and Wyola fought flames. body recovered after more than an hour. The death toll on Montana highways rose to 30 that day versus 39 a year earlier.
The Class AA state basketball tournament opens at the Butte Civic Center with an eight-team field and a queen contest by the Butte High School Key Club. Diane Halvers on is the local candidate. Games today include Great Falls vs Billings Broncs and Butte Public vs Anaconda with 26 000 to 30 000 expected. The tourney ends with the title game Saturday night. Attendance may exceed the 1953 record of 35 000.
NLRB hearings in Anaconda and Great Falls outlined delays and consent election plans for Mine-Mill and other unions. Anaconda workers face a four‑union choice or no affiliation if an election proceeds. Great Falls voters will decide representation for Mine-Mill or rival unions in mid‑April after a brief session.
Butte Mayor Vern Griffith was authorized to seek funds from the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency to study the feasibility of an urban renewal plan for the Upper East Side. A public hearing will be set. a survey firm contract and possible relocation issues were discussed.
The Montana Livestock Auction Co sold 2,250 cattle at its spring stock cow and feeder cattle sale drawing buyers from Montana Washington Idaho and Utah. Cattle came from Big Hole Basin Jefferson Madison Gallatin valleys Drummond Mis soula Rowan Three Forks and Helena with Hereford and Angus stock. Attendance was 238 and a catering luncheon hosted by the auction company and Butte Chamber of Commerce accompanied the sale. A April 7 horse sale and a May 9 equivalent sale are planned in addition to weekly cattle sales at Butte yards.
Montana Associate Justice Stanley M. Doyle faces another term after wife Aileen Doyle filed his nominating petition with Secretary of State Frank Murray. Doyle, absent touring for Ameri canism, previously served as Montana Bar Association president and Glendive city attorney.
Construction starts on a temporary warehouse for Anaconda Co. copper ore concentrator in Butte. Western Iron Works subcontracts the 40 by 80 foot steel building. foundation concrete may begin Thursday and building erection next week. Ralph Godtland notes four feet of frozen ground for excavation. Permanent work hinges on weather, planned around April 1 with general hiring after. Ralph M. Parsons Co. of Los Angeles holds the contract to build the multi million dollar plant due in 1964.
The February summary notes temperatures from 52 to 35 below zero with a warm first half and a severe cold snap after day 16. Feb 3 saw the month’s high, Lincoln’s Birthday brought 32 below, Feb 26 hit 35 below, then Feb 27 rose to 4 above with 33 below at night. Snow brought above normal moisture.
