Montana subscribers of Mountain States Telephone Co will pay about 2.6 million dollars more yearly starting April 1 after a Public Service Commission decision. The panel approved the higher rates two to one, with Chairman Smith dissenting. Billings Great Falls and Butte Missoula areas see varied increases, while Helena remains in a separate class.

Black man to plead in statutory reported incident case
Glenn Chapman 28, a Black man, faces statutory reported incident charges in a case involving a white girl. In District Court Judge John B McClernan granted till 10 am Tuesday to consult counsel before plea. Chapman’s bond, set at 5000, remains. defendant to return to county jail if not posted. Shirley Noble alias Lacy Chapman, about 25, a Black woman claiming wife name, was arraigned on attempting to procure a person under 18. Bond set at 1500. preliminary hearing set for 10 am Tuesday April 5. County Atty Maurice F Hennessee said same girl involved in both cases. Sheriff said girl held in county juvenile detention. Montana law prescribes 2 to 99 years for such conviction. Sheriff noted property in Chapman possession.
