Seven people were killed in Asuncion during a civilian revolt attempt. Armed civilians seized police headquarters, were repelled by government forces, and police chief Rogello Benitez exchanged gunfire with the attackers as authorities labeled the rebels Communist and opposition members.
The United States told Britain to formally present the Palestine case to the UN before any UN inquiry. Britain sought a commission of inquiry, while Syria's El Khoury urged a definite UN proposition or alternative steps.
British troops arrested 32 people outside martial law areas in Palestine today amid clashes. Some suspects linked to Irgun Zvai Leumi and the Stern gang. Totals reached 57 since martial law began. A police station near Tel Aviv was attacked and two mines wounded two officers.
A Hungarian official said the Soviet commander in chief in Budapest ordered the M News agency to stop publication of the American note protesting Russian interference in Hungary. Soviet Lt Gen V P Sviridov denied ordering suppression. London informants said Britain would back U S protest against Moscow backed moves.
Three prisoners escaped Geiger Army airfield after overpowering a guard and donning the uniform. Identified by military police are Privates Paul E. Wurdig Oscar L. Weltner and John Baigle with Wurdig and Weltner charged as AWOL and Baigle charged with larceny.
Winter storm cripples southeastern England delaying traffic and isolating London. Snow and ice halt deliveries causing milk, potatoes, and other goods to vanish from markets as households frantically stock up amid fears of near famine.
In Amritsar a brigade of British and Indian troops restored order after two days of rioting across Punjab centers. At least 136 killed and hundreds hospitalized in Amritsar Multan Rawalpindi and Lahore amid clashes between sectarian mobs during the push for India’s independence.
Police juvenile bureau rounded up a gang of teen aged gamblers who admitted burglaries car lootings and school locker pilferings to fund gambling debts from poker and roulette games. Seven of 20 boys were sent to the juvenile detention home and one boy claimed a $70 stake from selling stolen coats. Authorities said the youths gambled with parental knowledge and theft was used to settle debts.
Harmon Waley, convicted in the 1935 kidnapping of George Weyerhauser in Tacoma, Washington, lost his 15th bid for freedom. Federal Judge Michael J. Roche denied the habeas corpus petition in San Francisco.
Sixty Dutch marines sailors and police boarded the American Liberty ship Martin Behrman at Cheribon and overpowered the first mate to carry out a confiscation order from the Netherlands East Indies government. Tugboats moved the vessel for unloading of a 3 million dollar cargo amid Dutch seizure regulations.
Secretary of State George C. Marshall arrived in Berlin after wreaths in Paris to honor the Unknown Soldier. He conferred with Gen. Joseph T. McNarney and Lt. Gen. Lucius D. Clay ahead of Moscow talks on the German peace treaty as his aircraft landed in slush at Tempelhof Field.
Detroit March 7 Margaret Truman took a complete rest as she prepared for a nationwide radio singing debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Sunday night. An orchestra spokesman said there was no trace of the slight cold that troubled her during Wednesday audition with conductor Karl Krueger.
Butte remains mostly cloudy with occasional light snow on Saturday and warmer highs around 38. School of Mines reports a high of 35 and low of 10, while the airport shows a high of 34 and a low of 0. West of the divide in Montana sees cloudy, light snow shifting to light rain in the south Saturday with highs 30 to 40. East of the divide trend is increasing clouds with snow flurries, highs 10 to 20 in the north and east and 30 to 40 in the southwest.
The United States and Great Britain have urged Yugoslavia to surrender claims to nine sunk Italian ships, including the transatlantic liner Rex. The push comes after Yugoslav prize courts upheld the claims, which Washington and London say violates the Italy armistice terms.
The United Nations Security Council moved toward an American proposal to take over Japanese manded Pacific islands under UN trusteeship. Australia urged a study committee while Britain pushed delaying action until the Japanese peace treaty. The plan would grant the U S rights to fortify garrison and control air traffic across the Marshalls Carolines and Marianas.
Fallon County became the first in Montana to exceed its Red Cross fundraising quota of 799 dollars during the 1947 campaign. Public relations officer J. Mijolsness said the statewide drive was progressing well despite bad weather.
Washington March 7 The first Republican move toward a 6 billion budget cut approved a 897 million 72 thousand 750 dollar reduction in Treasury Post Office funds Democrats denounced the move as a sham and phony arguing 800 million of the total is a bookkeeping cut tied to tax refunds The panel said 300 million could be saved from refunds and another 300 million more may come from changes in tax laws without altering statutes The row over the tax refund cut risks derailing the larger budget reduction effort.
Ira Mosher of the National Association of Manufacturers told the House labor committee that a Supreme Court ruling in the John L. Lewis case shows the need for legislation to shield the public from industrial strife. He cited four root causes and urged action on industry wide bargaining, the closed shop, secondary boycotts, and mass picketing.
President Truman cancels Caribbean trip to meet congressional leaders over a possible 125 million to 250 million dollars in Greek aid. Officials say about half could fund bolstering the Greek army to quell civil strife, with surplus U S wartime materiel as potential sources. No plan for American troops to Greece is reported, and Britain plans to withdraw forces.
Nanking reports a 10 p.m. curfew on Tsingtao with garrison given wide search powers as Communist forces threaten the Shan tung port. Refugees flood the city and food prices rise while trains reach Kiaohsien. Government troops hold 60,000 in reserve. Harbin area sees evacuations.
Forty four locals of the C I O International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers, at odds with current leadership, will meet Saturday to discuss a new C I O affiliation under the banner Provisional Metal Workers Council C S O. They claim about 25 000 of the I U M S members support secession and favor Steelworkers and Marine Shipbuilding Unions as the master C I O bodies. John J Driscoll would chair the session with Reid Robinson as I U M S president in the background.
The Senate House committee accepted the June 30 death sentence for OPA and cut funds for the agency to operate only to that date. The House denied funds but later restored most spending, leaving a final plan to end all functions by June 30 with limited new money. Major Fleming warned operation only to April 30 without more funds as the deficiency bill totals about 178 million dollars.
