The House approved a bill authorizing the draft of unmarried women nurses aged 20 through 44. A nurse is considered married only if wed before March 15 1945 to curb draft evasion. The measure passed 347 to 42 and was sent to the Senate as part of Roosevelt's push for 20 000 nurses to ease armed services shortages.
US military officials say once the Rhine is crossed the Germans cannot halt the advance. A bridgehead and 50 miles beyond could allow a date for end of organized German resistance, with 200000 enemy troops against the crossing Allied forces ready to exploit.
Midwestern rivers led by the Ohio grew deeper on Wednesday night with crests anticipated 15 to 20 feet above flood level along the Ohio and tributaries. Thousands moved to higher ground as war production slowed and several deaths were reported. In Pittsburgh the confluence crest was seen near 33 to 34 feet while Portsmouth Ohio faced water encroachment with reinforced floodwalls.

Comdr. Harold E. Stassen proposed a worldwide code of human rights starting with a peace time ban on executions without just trials. He outlined seven points for a future world policy ahead of the San Francisco UN conference, calling for a global organization insured by force and a higher level of world government with global jurisdiction. He spoke at the University of Minnesota, a speech broadcast nationwide.
Allied forces under Patton push 65 miles in 58 hours across the middle Rhineland toward a junction with Hodges’s First Army near Coblenz. German resistance collapses as thousands are captured and the western Rhineland breaks under Allied advance.

About 1 200 American bombers and fighters attacked the Ruhr rail belts to cut off German supply lines. After a riot at the royal palace, ministers reaffirmed confidence in Bonomi who vowed a swift Fascist purge as police guarded the ministers' driveways with rifles and two tanks.
