Miss Annie M. Fleming a longtime Butte resident who owned the Apex Hotel at 429 West Park was fatally injured Friday night when struck by a car in Castro Valley California She had traveled to California to visit relatives and died at a local hospital She came to Butte in the early 1930s after her uncle’s death and operated the Apex Hotel until recently A Scotland native she came to the United States as a girl around World War I Surviving relatives live in Deer Lodge Scotland British Columbia Australia and California.

A UPI report from Cherry Point North Carolina says a flying boxcar carrying nine Marines crashed in a coastal swamp during a violent rain and wind storm. Eight died and five were crew with three passengers. Sgt. Ralph Mauro survived as radio operator. Four identified victims include Maj. William E. Zane, 41, Cherry Point. 1st Lt. Butte Boy 8 Hit By Car Serious Injuries In Accident
Eight year old Jimmie Greek son of Mr and Mrs Phil Howe of 503 Silver Bow Homes was struck by a southbound car driven by Thomas James Cavanaugh 17 of 1055 W Mercury at the intersection of Arizona and Porphyry. He suffered a severe head injury and remained unconscious. Cavanaugh remained in custody for questioning. The incident occurred about 525 PM as the boy tried to cross Arizona street east to west. The injured boy was taken to St James Hospital by the city ambulance.

Ex-Butte Actor Fred Stone Dies
North Hollywood California AP reports Fred Stone, famed musical comedy star, died at 85 after about two years of illness. Once a Butte resident, Stone had become totally blind since a heart attack two years earlier, with blindness progressive from injuries in a 1927 Connecticut plane crash that briefly threatened his career. Born in Valmont Colorado, he began as a circus acrobat and later enjoyed a 50 year show business career.

Two Railroad Unions Restrained From Continuing Walkout

Fugitive Who Held Four in Terror Hunted
The FBI joined a large cross state manhunt for William E. Smothers, a 38 year old Alabama fugitive serving 160 years for six robbery convictions. He overpowered a highway patrolman Thursday and seized the officer's revolver, keeping four people in fear for 14 hours as authorities pursued him toward the Chattanooga area. A large search by Tennessee Alabama and Georgia officers used bloodhounds and a patrol helicopter in the Tennessee River Valley.

Armstead Truck Crash Claims One Life Near Armstead
Fred Armstrong, 48, of Salt Lake City, died in the flaming wreckage of a northbound tanker carrying 8000 gallons of aircraft fuel near Armstead on a slight curve. Driver Lyle Haws, 56, escaped before explosions rocked Beaverhead County. he received hospital treatment for cuts and burns. Coroner Raymond Schwartz interviewed Haws at Barrett Hospital in Dillon.
