Butte Red Cross drive leaders urge contributors to double their gifts with 40 cents of every dollar staying in Butte to strengthen local relief and support overseas service. They point to wartime duties and past efforts, including aid after the Continental Divide airliner crash and messages for enlisted men.
In a head on crash inside a 4000 foot tunnel under Bozeman hill two freight trains wrecked near Livingston causing derailments and halting Northern Pacific Main Line traffic. No injuries reported as wreckers cleared tracks and detours taken via Milwaukee Road. Cause under investigation with signal confusion or poor visibility suspected.
Eva Duarte de Peron was put up for vice president to run with her husband in the 1952 election. The Peronist party of Entre Rios province led by Gov. Ramon Albarinos announced support for the man and wife team at a mass meeting of 16,000 Peronistas in Parana.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower announced a seven member brain trust to plan and direct Western Europe defense from SHAPE. The group includes three British general staff officers and one American and will serve on the high policy board. Britain to transfer light bomber command to Eisenhower’s Atlantic pact command.
Defense Mobilization Director Charles E. Wilson warned Key West labor leaders that nothing and nobody will impede defense production. He and President Truman backed a neutral manpower body and denounced labor policy critics as dominated by big business amid disputes over wage ceilings and mobilization control.

Debate focused on service lengths and manpower pressures as the administration pushes a draft-UMT bill allowing induction at 18 for 24 months.
Three Americans Julius Rosenberg Ethel Rosenberg and Morton Sobell face trial in federal court for allegedly passing atom bomb secrets to the Russians. Jury selection dragged on as potential jurors objected to international tension and the death penalty. The prosecution seeks the death penalty. cooperator testimony from David Greenglass and Harry Gold awaits.
The Defense Department announced Korean War casualties from Montana. Pfc. Robert W. Ketchingman of Ennis died of wounds in action. Pvt. Bob L. Bozarth of Jordan was wounded. Other Montanans listed as wounded include Corp. Paul M. Barrett of Chateau, and Corp. Garnet E. Norris of Kalispell. Also missing in action are Corp. Charles B. Schlagel of Bigfork and Billy Bjork of Flathead county.
In Rome the Italian Chamber of Deputies passed Premier Alcide De Gasperi a 325 to 16 vote of confidence on the defense appropriation bill. The Communist bloc walked out in protest after clashes over a secret ballot and a three day notification demand.
East Berlin Communists launch a come into my parlor campaign to woo West German visitors. Mayor Fritz Ebert personally invites travelers to city hall for coffee and talk, then hands leaflets praising East Germany. Visitors return to the West noting the contrast with shortages and high prices.
In Paris on March 6 Socialist leader Guy Mollet failed to win confirmation as France’s premier. The national assembly approved his nomination by 286 to 259, 25 votes short of the 311 needed.
In Paris on March 6 a sharp clash between Andrei Gromyko and Western delegates at the Big Four deputies meeting stalled on how to interpret basic issues. The group debated topics for a future foreign ministers conference with Gromyko pressing a German disarmament driven agenda while the West favored a focus on international tension and Austrian independence.
Oscar Collazo testified in federal court that he fired the first shot during the Blair House gun battle on November 1 and aimed at White House guard Pvt. Donald Birdzell, but he said he did not intend to kill Birdzell or President Truman. He acknowledged plans to hit Truman's guards and defense testimony concluded with no further witnesses.
Senator McFarland of Arizona said Senate delays hinder Gen Dwight D Eisenhower in building a western European defense force. He urged Senate action on a troops to Europe resolution before March 22. Senator Wherry contended the administration risks American lives by sending troops to Europe.
Allied infantry crossed the Han river east of Red-held Seoul marking a flanking advance. North Korean forces launched a heavy assault near Pangnim nine miles northeast of the frontline highway town, with initial reports of a Red penetration but terrain limiting swift Red counteroffensive efforts.
Butte will be warmer Wednesday after noon with a morning low near five above and a high around 15 above. Tuesday brought minus 20 at the airport and minus five at the School of Mines with 30 degree highs at the airport and college. A heavy 3 to 4 inch snowfall covered thawed spots in the business district. In Helena a federal official described Montana’s weather as cold snowy and windy with open highways and possible closures if winds rise after a blizzard killed at least four persons earlier in the week.
Postmaster General Jesse Donaldson urged Congress to raise postal rates or face continued deficits and reduced service. He backed an administration bill to lift rates by 163.7 million dollars annually to begin closing a 521 million dollar next year shortfall.
