First Lt. Vincent P. Curry of Butte earned the Silver Star for leading an eight man assault squad in a trench siege action on November 28 1944. He charged an archway defended by machine guns taking five prisoners and enabling his company to seize a foothold in the enemy town.
U S Third Army drives toward the Rhine after Cologne falls to the First Army. Patton’s tanks advance along the Rhine west bank with more than 1 500 Germans captured, including a corps commander. Weather hampers progress as spearheads move east of Bitburg.
U S Pacific Fleet reports three Marine divisions resumed the offensive on Iwo Jima after a major artillery bombardment. By 5 30 p m local time Marines gained small local footholds on the north end aided by land based Army fighter planes from Moto Yama airfield No 1. Enemy dead exceed 14 000 with stiff resistance continuing as carrier planes and warships back the assault.
In Rome on March 6 crowds attacked the Bo n oli government after Gen Mario Roatta, former fascist chief of staff and war crimes defendant, escaped a military hospital. Demonstrators shouted death threats toward the king and Roatta. 1 truck driver was killed as 50,000 workers protested in the Colosseum area. The crisis centers on Roatta’s escape and potential exile to Portugal or Vatican City.
The War department listed three Montanans among 1090 U S soldiers wounded in action in the Asiatic European Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. MacArthur announced eight American divisions regrouping for the final phases of the Luzon campaign to eliminate about 80 000 Japanese still holding out in four sectors. Allied forces report limited activity on all fronts as operations shift to pursuit, mopping up coastal areas, and air and sea strikes against Japanese shipping and strongholds.
Pvt Robert G Egge 19 of Butte was slightly wounded in action in Belgium on January 12 while with Gen George S Pattons Third Army. He wrote from England that a shrapnel wound in his foot is healing slowly and he is recovering. Born in Missoula, he moved to Butte at age one eight years ago and graduated from Butte High School two weeks before enlisting in June 1944.
A 10 000 ton ammunition freighter exploded in Vancouver harbor on Tuesday. Flames and debris shot into the air, the ship’s bridge was hurled, and at least six men were believed trapped. About 24 survivors were treated, with 12 seriously injured.
A cold outbreak moved toward flood areas Tuesday night ending heavy rains that raised the Ohio River to levels seen only twice before. Rain subsided after subzero heat in Bemidji and a sharp temperature drop across Illinois and Indiana, with brief relief expected in northern plains.
The Bureau of Mines on Tuesday announced a new coking coal source in the Kemmerer district of Lincoln County Wyoming with an estimated potential yield of 15,345,000 tons. The fuel is in demand by the Western Steel industry.
The House banking committee begins public hearings on the Bretton Woods agreements to create an international bank for reconstruction and an international monetary fund. Treasury Secretary Morgenthau will testify. Rep Wolcott warns of lend-lease effects on Bretton Woods and possible probes. The fund would total 8.8 billion dollars with quotas from nations to support balance of trade.
Governor Sam C. Ford announced June 5 as the date to fill the Eastern Montana Second District seat left by the death of Rep. James F. O’Connor. He will issue a proclamation and delegate candidate nomination to party central committees. The move coincides with a $12 million highway debenture referendum and follows prior Assembly actions on primaries and conventions.
San Jose police Tuesday night looked for a group of men who tried to burn down the home of Joe Taseda, a returned Japanese American internee. After firing several shots toward him they fled in a car.
London dispatch reports Marshal Zhukov’s First White Russian army reached Stettin bay after a 25 mile advance that captured Cammin and over 500 Pomeranian towns. Stalin announced Rokossovsky’s Second Army seized Grudziadz with 5,000 prisoners as new Baltic breakthroughs emerged toward Berlin and Stettin.
The Senate, after pruning penalties from its manpower bill, stalled amid oratory. The vote 44 to 35 approved Bushfield’s amendment removing a 10 000 fine and up to one year jail for violations of wartime manpower ceilings. Leaders urged faster action as three other plans remain under consideration.
Lindsay Merle A. Wass of Roy Montana was named Montana director of the Office of Price Administration succeeding A T Peterson of Billings. Regional Administrator Dick Batterton Denver announced the selection from three candidates submitted by the Civil Service commission. Wass will assume duties immediately and was praised for business experience community service and knowledge of the state.
The Senate confirmed President Roosevelt's nomination of Fred M. Vinson to head the 40 billion dollar Reconstruction Finance Corporation and allied agencies. The 55 year old Kentucky native won approval by voice vote, moving him from economic stabilization director to federal loan administrator.
Mostly cloudy conditions prevail Wednesday and Wednesday night with a high near 30. Tuesday recorded a high of 28 and a low of minus 18. West of the divide expect considerable cloudiness with highs 25 to 35. Thursday remains cloudy with light snow or rain and little temperature change. East of the divide, warmer Wednesday, and Thursday brings more clouds with snow flurries in the western mountains and mild temperatures.
Royal Air Force Lancasters blasted Wesel on Tuesday night, driving off fleeing German troops and vehicles. Mosquito bombers also hit Berlin for the 15th straight night, while American heavies conducted a daylight strike on oil targets as the long air offensive continues.
British Indian forces under Lt. Gen. Sir William Slim push to seven miles west of Mandalay with Japanese reportedly retreating toward the city for a final defense. Front reports note western advances along the Irrawaddy and sharp fighting near Ngazin on the south bank.
Fifth army forces broke through in the Mount Belvedere sector advancing 400 to 800 yards. U S Tenth Mountain Division and Brazilian troops pressed toward terrain not far from the highway from Pistoia to Bologna amid heavy mortar fire, improving positions west of the road.
