The war manpower commission instructed local draft boards to keep farm workers in deferred classifications even if armed forces quotas falter. New rules empower state boards to request deferments, allow appeals, and require 30 days to reassign workers before drafting. A separate funding cut aims to curb farm labor recruitment.

Doctor Peterson of Murray hospital in Butte became the first Montana medical professional elected to the board of directors of the American Society for the Control of Cancer. The pathologist, not aware of the honor, learned of the election from an Associated Press dispatch read to him. He did not attend the New York meeting where the society held its annual session. He serves as Mining City adviser on cancer control in Montana and has previously been state adviser. He has authored several cancer control papers.
A House appropriations subcommittee slashed more than 50 percent of the Agriculture department’s request to recruit farm labor. The panel cut 65 million, routing 6 million to extension for 3 million workers, 59 million to Farm Security for interstate labor moves, and moved the program under extension service only.
British and Canadian bombers hit Essen, target home to Krupp, with a heavy night raid leaving large fires across several square miles. Pilots reported a massive explosion and a towering smoke column while 14 bombers were lost and returned crews described a huge orange blaze.
London dispatch reports Prime Minister Hubert Pierlot of the government in exile told Belgians in a Saturday broadcast that Axis war criminals would not escape punishment by fleeing to neutral countries. He said a list of the guilty and their misdeeds is being drawn up.
The district court drawn 110 Silver Bow county taxpayers for jury duty by Judge J. J. Lynch. Those summoned must report at 10 a.m. Monday, March 15, to participate in a term hearing featuring 51 civil suits and 25 police court appeals. Reads list includes Arthur Ripley, John H. Richards, A. Mrs. Charles W. Tillett national Democratic leader and head of the women’s bureau will be honored at a Silver Bow county Democratic women luncheon in Butte. Accompanying her is Miss Lorena A. Hickok from Washington. Prominent Montana Democrats Mrs. W. W. Hamilton and Miss Lydia Leathers will join the event with precinct women invited.
A Navy task force bombarded Vila and Munda in the Solomon Islands and sank two large Japanese destroyers that tried to interfere. No US ships were lost. The surface action marked the first contact so far north in the Solomons archipelago.
Montana lawmakers remain at odds over funding for the Greater University system with the House proposing 2 751 089.42 dollars and the Senate asking for 3 119 600 90 dollars for a two year period starting July 1. A conference committee was formed as debate continued into the weekend.
Butte student Joyce Callison and pianist Elizabeth Trethewey won top honors at the Montana Federation of Music Clubs Competitive Musical Festival in St John church hall. Callison took first in the student musicians division over Villa Marie LaVelle of Butte. Trethewey won in the young artists division. Both received cash prizes and will represent Montana at the tri state meet in Pocatello Idaho in April.
Civil air patrol pilots began a systematic search of southeastern Arizona for a B-17 bomber missing on a Portland Oregon to unknown destination flight. The last report placed the aircraft about 50 miles east of Phoenix at 11 45 p m Wednesday with nine crew aboard.
Soviet communique reports the capture of Gzhatsk 92 miles west of Moscow as part of the central front winter offensive. Russian troops advance from Rzhev toward Smolensk, securing villages and threatening Nazi rail links along the Mos cow Vyazma Smolensk corridor and preserving a springboard toward Moscow.
Washington March 6. Ten members of the Senate finance and banking committees will urge Administrator Prentiss Brown to adopt sweeping OPA changes. Proposals include reducing personnel limiting price control to basics abandoning profit regulation and raising ceilings on farm products. Brown urged voluntary controls where practicable amid ongoing criticism.
The American Red Cross drive in Butte continues for another week with $9,792.15 still needed to reach $46,000. Five Anaconda Copper units report 100 percent participation. New groups join the effort and donors with under five dollars seek honor roll placement at 62 West Broadway.
Allied Headquarters reports Rommel’s Axis forces launched a dawn offensive against Montgomery’s Eighth Army in North Africa. The attack aimed to weaken the Mareth line and stall Allied advances after El Alamein, as Rommel sought to pin down Anglo American forces and gain time amid mounting losses.
Mrs. Della True aged 34 and mother of seven confessed Saturday to killing her two youngest children by poisoning their milk after being taunted by schoolmates over their tattered clothing.
Philadelphia March 6 The cruiser U S S Astoria, one of three heavy ships sunk at the Savo Islands last August, was launched Saturday at the Cramp Shipbuilding Company with likely battleship status and a proud name sake history.
Bozeman reports Montana farmers respond to 1943 farm production program from the state War Production Board. Despite shortages and long hours, farmers pledge to boost output while shifting crops as needed, with irrigation areas favored for diversified farming.
The report shows shifts in 1943 farm output with a 43 000 increase a 56 000 increase a 300 000 decrease and a 1 718 000 dozen increase along with a 10 percent and 12 percent rise and a 310 000 acre expansion.
