The city council postponed a decision on explosive self service gasoline to allow opposing factions to meet. Each side will send one representative to a closed session with the committee of the whole. The crowd of about 175 filled the chamber as the issue was tabled for further study.

Rescue workers crawled through muddy rubble in a 500 mile tunnel system near Salt Lake City to reach William Buck Jones who was trapped 20 miles southwest of the city. State Mine Inspector Tony Bullock spent 22 hours in the mine and reported Jones was conscious and hungry but safe after emerging Wednesday morning.
The Montana Senate tentatively approved six appropriations bills totaling over 4 million dollars. The Montana State University project seeks 2.6 million for athletic facilities including a new football stadium funded mainly by private sources and student fees with approval by the State Board of Education and a student vote. Other major items include 193,500 for an airport terminal at West Yellowstone and 127,500 from general funds plus 205,000 from federal sources for a study of the executive branch by a nine member commission.
A Prinair four engine De Havilland Heron carrying 17 passengers and two crew members vanished on a flight from St Thomas to San Juan Puerto Rico. One listed passenger was William Delcourt Eastern Airlines regional manager. Prinair operates routes between Puerto Rico and the U S Virgin Islands.
A bearded ex convict hijacked a Nation al Airlines Boeing 727 over Norfolk Virginia and forced a return to Miami. He robbed Raul Rowman of 1700 dollars during the flight to Cuba and was kept by Cuban authorities after the money was returned.
Ruth Eisemann-Schier, 26, the first woman on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list, was arrested in Norman Oklahoma for the Decatur Georgia motel kidnapping of Barbara Jane Mackle. Steven Krist already was captured, and the FBI traced Eisemann-Schier after she applied for a Norman nursing job.
Albert G. Haglund 52 was declared dead on January 6 with a death date of October 14 1968. An estate attorney confirmed he was alive in Helena on Wednesday after disappearance while fishing and goose hunting at Canyon Ferry Lake. Authorities had tied a possible boat accident to a break in at Magpie Bay two weeks earlier.
On the 60th lawful day in Helena, Montana lawmakers faced about 30 conference disputes and $187.3 million in appropriation bills. Speaker James P. Lucas warned of possible injunctions that could trigger a paid overtime special session, while aiming to speed up settlements and avoid a clock-stopping tactic. Conferees moved to finish major income and outlay measures as the session neared a Sunday end.
Rockets hit downtown Saigon at 6 a.m. killing at least 25 civilians and wounding scores. About six Soviet built 12mm rockets fell as the curfew ended, destroying homes in the 4th Precinct and bursting emergency wards with injured civilians including many women and children.
