Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory says it achieved the world's first thermonuclear fusion reaction generated by a carbon dioxide laser. The brief fusion event followed by ERDA notes progress toward laser fusion for energy, with glass lasers still yielding longer reactions and higher neutron outputs.
About 60 developmentally disabled men at Warm Springs and Galen state institutions would be relocated to Boulder River School and Hospital under a legislative subcommittee budget proposal. The plan, intended to boost care, targets roughly 45 from Galen and 15 from Warm Springs when openings exist.
The first 23 of 300 inmates are transferred to the new six million dollar Montana State Prison facility on the prison ranch in Deer Lodge. Warden Roger Crist notes the move will continue, creating about 80 new jobs and expanding capacity to 334 inmates across the dormitories and maximum security units with advanced alarms and control centers.
