Washington reports that the first week’s meat allowance may total 134 pounds per person, with a future rise possible as slaughtering increases. Delays to April 15 are possible, while price controls and a rigid slaughter license system aim to curb black markets and enforce uniform prices nationwide.
The diocese of Helena suspends the Catholic fast and abstinence during Lent except Ash Wednesday March 10 and Good Friday April 23. Bishop Joseph M. The Montana Office of War Information announced price ceilings for Butte shop types and said these standards should apply statewide. Independent stores with under 250,000 annual sales and independent chains with more were listed with specific ceiling prices for bacon ham and pork products.
Allied headquarters in Australia reports the complete destruction of a Japanese convoy of 22 ships in the Bismarck Sea, including 10 warships and 12 transports. About 15,000 Japanese troops destined for Lae, New Guinea were lost. two destroyers were sunk, and 27 more enemy planes were shot down, increasing total Allied air losses to 82. Lifeboats and barges carrying survivors were also destroyed near Finschhafen as Allied forces intensified attacks.
Red Lodge Montana March 4 40 bodies have been recovered from the Smith coal mine disaster near Bearcreek. Dewey Hardy 48 of Red Lodge and Ignace Marinchek 55 of Bearcreek were identified among the dead. Rescue teams say 34 miners remain unaccounted and death results from carbon monoxide fumes and blast concussion.
Gov. Coke R. Stevenson and Texas’ 300000 war industry workers signed a pact banning strikes and work stoppages for the war effort. The agreement gives the governor broad power to prevent unauthorized actions and aims to assure production in shipbuilding oil refining and chemical industries.
