On Ash Wednesday in Butte the Lenten season began with services across Mining City churches marking 40 days of reflection Lent ends Easter Sunday April 18.
U S Air Force jets attacked secret targets in Laos and North Vietnam following a larger strike on North Vietnamese military sites. More than 30 fighter bombers hit the Ho Chi Minh trail region while avoiding disclosure of exact objectives. Six raiders were shot down and efforts to rescue pilots continued as reports vary on returns.
Washington UPI reports the House approved a $1.1 billion Appalachian aid program by 257 to 165 with Republicans failing to pass a substitute bill. The plan, written by the Senate, allocates $840 million for roads and facilities supporting education health farms and conservation in impoverished Appalachia. President Johnson marks this as his first Great Society victory of the year.
Pris on-bound Billie Sol Estes, tried a third time, was found innocent of lying to the government about debts by a Dallas jury. He remains in custody to begin a 15 year mail fraud sentence after the Supreme Court declined review.
A March 1 snow survey by C A Krall and colleagues reports higher snow depths and water content across nine measuring sites in Southwestern Montana compared with 1964 and 15 year averages. Notable sites include Pipestone Pass Jack Creek Meadow Lemhi Pass Trail Creek Jahnke Creek Bloody Dick Goldstone Berry Meadow and others.
Fair and warmer through Thursday with highs near 42 in Butte and 20 to 50 in divided regions. East of Divide expect 20 to 35 Thursday and 35 to 50 west. lows range 5 below to 25, northeast cooler. West of Divide stays fair with 35 to 45 highs and 5 to 15 lows. Data covers 12 hour maximums, 18 hour minimums, 24 hour precipitation to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
A 2 1/2 year old Butte girl, Judy Ann Wehrle, was treated at St James Community Hospital after drinking leather cleaner. Police rushed her to the hospital. her stomach was pumped and she remained under observation. The cleaner, kept in a bathroom cabinet, could be fatal if swallowed.
Gov. Tim Babcock vetoed the strict air pollution control bill and several other items on Wednesday. He urged passage of a more moderate measure SBI91 and criticized the compulsory arbitration clause of the electio n-bureau proposal. He noted the broad ban would likely violate many businesses and called for reasonable air pollution controls this session.
Montana lawmakers consider a three cent cigarette tax to fund a new 15 million building program via 5 percent of state income and corporate taxes. If voters reject the plan in the November 1966 referendum, revenue would stay with the general fund. Estimates of cigarette tax yield vary, with some forecasts up to 3.5 million yearly.
Butte city council certified two bond measures for the April 5 general election, totaling 555 000, including 425 000 for a swimming pool and 130 000 for fire department needs. County certificates confirmed sufficient signatures from 2183 and 2140 taxpayers on respective petitions. One councilman split his vote, supporting the fire bonds but opposing the pool.
Mrs. Sheryl Abeyta of Butte delivered a baby girl after being removed from a Northern Pacific train at Paradise near Missoula. The mother and 6 pound 5 ounce infant were reported in good condition at Hot Springs County Hospital in Paradise. Dennis Jr. age one remained with relatives as the family reunites after the Spokane visit. Father Dennis Abeyta Sr. traveled to join them at the hospital.
Frank H. Day announced Emil Krambick will supervise copper operations at the new Clyde E. Weed concentrator. Krambick, from Colfax Washington, a 1941 Anaconda smelter veteran, has held multiple superintendent roles in plants and services prior to this posting.
The Montana House approved a new State Board of Vocational Education formed by the public instruction chief and three appointees, rejecting a proposed State Investment Council. The move accompanies a $7 daily retroactive pay raise and funding for federal matching. The measure also sets up an Legislative Audit Committee and funds for coal resource research, with various budget items forwarded to the Senate.
The Butte City Council unanimously approves rescheduling its next meeting to March 15 instead of March 17 Saint Patrick's Day. Alderman Terry leads the measure amid references to aldermen with Emerald Isle names.
