Montana lawmakers settled in for the 60th and final legislative day as desks and belongings were cleared. Thursday's recess suggested Saturday evening as earliest adjournment with expected action on several money bills in Senate Finance and Claims Com.
The Montana House approved a joint conference report on a bill raising the gasoline tax to seven cents and boosting highway revenue by about 2.5 million dollars annually. The Senate concurred, and related measures to raise diesel fuel and adjust vehicle weight taxes also advanced. House leaders forecast a busy, near-finish session with about 50 bills still awaiting action and talks of a special tax-study task force.
The Senate Banking Committee opens a friendly investigation into the stock market. Witness G Keith Funston of the New York Stock Exchange says rising prices reflect investor confidence, not recruitment of brokers, and contrasts current boom with 1929. Fulbright probes whether price rises favor the exchange but warns against unreasonable levels.
In Helena the 34th Legislature approved a conference committee plan setting the minimum school foundation support at 26,778,908 dollars annually, about 1.3 million more than the current schedule. House and Senate votes were 83 to 1 and 36 to 18 respectively, with the provision making the foundation schedule a permanent law until future legislative action.

Robert Lloyd Trammel, 30, a Helena resident, died in a PBY crash near Burbank California while preparing for a flight to Paraguay. He was born March 9 1924 in Yakima Washington and lived in Missoula before moving to Helena 21 years ago. Survived by parents Clarence and unidentified mother, brother Jack of Billings, and several nephews and nieces. Body forwarded to Retz Funeral Home.
Long Beach California saw a fatal crash when a converted navy two engine flying boat failed after takeoff. Pilot Charles Carpenter 37 of Montebello and flight engineer Robert Trammel 30 of Burbank perished. The aircraft, a ferrying service conversion, headed to Asuncion Paraguay for National Airlines delivery.
