President Truman arrived in Mexico City for a three day goodwill visit. He reaffirmed U S commitment to protecting weaker nations from oppression and to non intervention. Mexican President Aleman emphasized mutual economic cooperation and education to reduce prejudice.
London report says Greece seeks American financial and military aid to expand its army from 100000 to about 130000 and restore order on the northern frontier amid guerrilla warfare. Greek spokesman Pallas warns crisis if Western aid is withheld. Britain may keep troops to maintain order.
The Supreme Court agreed to review James C. Petrillo's case while delaying ruling on the government injunction tied to the November coal mine strike and John L. Lewis. The March 31 deadline looms as miners may face orders to work without a new contract, with further opinions due March 10, 17, and 31.
New York titled Ed ward V. Loughlin resigned as leader of Tammany Hall after months of attacks by Mayor William O Dwyer who pushes for a reorganization and backs Frank Sampson for the post. O Dwyer seeks city hall patronage and may install Sampson as the new leader, boosting his own control of New York politics.
The United Nations economic and social council voted unanimously to set up machinery to assist in Europe's postwar recovery. Montana House approved a 350000 general fund appropriation for two university units. Northern Montana College in Havre would get 200000 for a main building and Eastern Montana Normal School in Billings 150000 for a science building. The measure, discussed amid debate to include additional institutions, is separate from postwar construction allocations.
Firefighters were called to extinguish a blaze along the Arkansas River near the Haynes ice plant in Canon City. Flames covered the river bed and spread downstream. An allegedly emptied 3,000 gallon underground gas tank about 100 feet from the river was found by Sylvanus Haynes and had been filled Friday.
Five grenades were hurled into a British military office in Haifa Monday night after Irgun Zvai Leumi declared open warfare in Palestine. The British reported no casualties while Irgun claimed major attacks on Petah Tiqra and Hadera in retaliation for martial law.
Five New Castle residents were killed in a Monday accident near Deerfield Ohio when their car sideswiped a truck and crashed into another vehicle. Victims named Matthew Aber 25 Marie Aber 65 John Saesan 36 Susanna Saesan 28 Susan Saesan 5. Two year old Judith Saesan survived in hospital in Ravenna.
Fourteen international rescue planes including from the United States Bolivia Chile and Peru continued to shuttle flood victims from Trinidad capital of Beni state in northern Bolivia. They parachuted food and supplies for the city’s 7,000 inhabitants amid the disaster.

About 200000 Communist forces moving toward Changchun were encircled by government units in Manchuria. The ministry of information reported 20000 casualties and said Chiang Kai-shek aims to wipe out Communists in China and Manchuria by year end. Two American observers were captured during the operation.
