The day features a Capitol swearing and a reception at the White House as Coolidge prepares to depart.
The new administration begins with Herbert Hoover moving to the White House and 573 000 federal employees returning to work under the same system. About 18 000 positions are tied to the new regime, mainly minor posts and postmasterships, with 15 000 in the first three classes. The civil service already absorbed the fourth class postmasters, leaving about 3 000 jobs for future changes, many in the Internal Revenue bureau.
