Strike bound counties win crash job program approval

Mayor Thomas F. Powers announced receipt of a letter from Labor Secretary W. Willard Wirtz designating Silver Bow Deer Lodge Broadwater Meagher and Jefferson counties for a concentrated employment program to ease unemployment after the copper strike. A meeting with labor and agriculture officials is planned for March 11 and a potential half million dollar budget is noted for Silver Bow and Deer Lodge counties.

Report on Cheadle death filed in U S District Court Monday

The state secret report by Investigator Martin Mangan on Larry Cheadle's death October 31, 1966, is to be filed Monday in U S District Court as part of Janet Sirrine's $305000 wrongful death civil rights suit against the State and six prison officials. The suit alleges beatings and inhumane treatment in a dungeon cell at the prison Recreation Building. Autopsy listed possible causes as acute pulmonary edema, heart dilation, or epileptic seizure.

Fourteen-year-old cave-in tragedy near Great Falls

Ten year old Victor C. Kraut died in a cave-in while playing in an eight foot hole in a sandy hill near his home. Police were called to rescue him as he was buried in four to five feet of dirt. He died on arrival at a Great Falls hospital.

Bomb damages U S consulate in Turin Italy

A bomb blast at the U S consulate in Turin injures residents and damages the building. Police suspect leftist protesters against the Vietnam War planted the TNT device. The Swedish consulate in the same building is also damaged and the blast occurred at 8 40 p m as a police car stood outside. the consulate had closed.

Butte Chamber announces Orchids for Enterprise program

Patrick Kenney chair of the Butte Chamber relations committee outlined the third annual Orchids for Enterprise dinner to be held Wednesday at the Finlen hotel. Forty four or more firms will receive orchids for investments in Butte's future, meeting three standards including new business with $25 000 minimum investment, new ownership with $25 000 minimum, or expansion of existing business with $10 000 plus, all in 1967. Speakers include Don Harrington and Joe Roberts with entertainment by Girls Central High School performers.

Childhood pals buried after separate Vietnam deaths

Owen Garnet and William Goldberg, childhood friends from Miami, were buried Saturday after arriving from Vietnam on separate flights. Garnet, 20, enlisted after Goldberg’s draft, while Goldberg, 21, had married shortly before departing. they died nine days apart after serving four months in Vietnam.
