YORT BENTON March 2 A man described as a Yates resident was sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty to the fatal shooting of a rancher at a Northern Montana area. District Judge C F Holt imposed the life term amid testimony of intoxication and memory loss. One other person was wounded in the incident.
James L. McVay, 33, was sentenced to hard labor in Brontalia prison after pleading guilty to a murder charge in the Feb. 22 death of Glen Hollandsworth at a Genoa ranch home. Hollandsworth's 11 year old son Harvey was wounded, and Hollandsworth was shot in the head. Mrs. Hollandsworth reported the shooting as she fled. McVay was captured Feb. 29 about four miles from the ranch after authorities chased him from a sheep camp cabin. he testified he had been drinking and could not recall the incident.
An overflow crowd gathered Tuesday night at the A C M Employees club to enjoy a four part musical show. Betty Wonnacott's junior accordion band led a program of dancers and singers with strong applause for each number.
Mrs. Bessie S. Tait wife of Robert F. Tait longtime Whitehall resident died Monday in a Great Falls hospital after a hearth whach illness while visiting her son in law and daughter in the Electric City. She was born in Missouri in 1874 and moved through Montana communities before marrying in Belgrade in 1916 and settling in Whitehall. Survived by husband sons in law and daughter in law four grandchildren a brother and sister in Butte and a wide circle of friends. Funeral arrangements set for Thursday at 1 o clock at the Masons temple with Acacia chapter OBS services. interment in Whitehall cemetery.
Helena March 2 The Montana Supreme Court may take original jurisdiction Wednesday on a writ to compel payment of salaries and expenses of the state aviation board. The commission seeks 9401 for salaries, office rental, phone services and other items withheld since December awaiting a 1947-48 appropriation. If funds are not paid promptly the board may be forced to suspend operations and await the 1951 legislature. Commission officials include Director Frank Wiley and Commissioners Hayward, Cummings, Ferguson, Norby, Johnson, and Juhnson.
Bozeman Montana March 2 William B Nelson a 1932 Montana State college graduate will supervise the new Eastern Mohiclane Agricultural Experiment station branch at Sidney. College President H R Retins said Nelsons appointment will be submitted to the state education board for final approval at its next meeting. The station has purchased 160 irrigated acres north of Sidney with Richland county and Sidney providing 100 acres of non irrigated land for rent free use. Building construction is to start after July 1. Nelson resigned as work aid conservation tat for the soil conservation service to accept the post. He taught agronomy at MSG three years and worked for the Bureau of Plant Industry and was assistant fieldman for Great Western Sugar company.
Florence McLeod Burns 16, a Wolf Creek widow of John Burns, died in Chicago after major surgery. Born July 4, 1877 on Prince Edward Island, she moved to Montana as a girl, lived in Butte Philipsburg Wolf Creek and Helena, and was active in church and civic life. Survived by eight grandchildren, four sons Bougins Seattle Arthur San Francisco Donald Helena Kenneth Wolf Creek, two daughters Mrs Norman Piedlein Chicago and Mrs Ralph Wanderer Spokane, sisters Mrs Jane MacMillan Butte and Mrs James Cannole Conrad. Funeral and burial planned in Helena.
Land sale in Pondera and Chouteau counties yielded $120,000 last week, state Commissioner J. W. Wilker reported. A 240 acre tract in Pondera brought $51 per acre, while 160 acres in another Pondera section sold at $41 per acre. The lowest price in Pondera was $13 per acre for 160 acres.
Helena March 2 Sheriff J Ry Munger says an autopsy will be performed on John Neilson about 40 of Seattle. The body was found in a local bottlroom Monday. A note indicated despondency and a blood clot was found on Nelsons lips prompting the autopsy.
Bozeman reports wood ticks showing up unusually early as a hiker finds several during a trek. In Helena a separate labor action involving about 45 royal AFL printers union members and 39 Helena Pointing Contractors associates continues after walkouts began Monday.
Helena March 2 Rep Verey A D Ewart urged increase in timber research in Montana. Montana Chamber of Commerce said he pressed for more research and noted pole pine timber could fuel a large market for utility poles. The chamber stressed many small wood firms lack facilities and need public research support to cut waste in wood product manufacture.
Two 20 year old men Glen N Taylor driver and Russell Beebe passenger from Idaho working in mines escaped serious harm after their car crashed through a guard rail on Elk Park and plunged down a 50 foot embankment. Patrol officers cited a single straight stretch of U S highway No 1 and attributed the crash to defective mechanical equipment.
A March report from Tokyo cites a U S Navy medical officer stating Russia pressed for influence in the formation of a new Japanese government during an outbreak of sleeping sickness on Guam. The Allied Council notes six hospitalizations with other cases read as underscores of political pressure. Premier-designate Ashide faced purge for politics, while Britain’s Labour party links Czech Communist moves to Socialist cooperation.
The suit alleges Governor Folsom fathered a child with Christine Putman Johnston, claims a prior common law marriage, and that birth and public announcements were delayed for political reasons. It states the child, named James E. Folsom, was born in Nashville with the family moved to Michigan until after a June runoff. The case seeks court decrees on marriage validity and paternity, with further hearings possible after Folsom’s response.

Potash longtime Farriers National conference manager linked to CIO Interna tional Fur and Leather Workers union was cited as a National Committee member of the American Communist party born in Russia arriving in 1915. W F Watkins district director of immigration and naturalization service reported the four men claiming a hunger strike filed pleas of hunger.
Deer Lodge will host the divisional basketball tournament with performances by Dillon and Thompson Falls bands. Dillon performs Friday and handles half the intermission entertainment. Thompson Falls performs Saturday. Miss Shirley Calnan, director of Powell county high school band, oversees the entertainment with her students present throughout the event.
Deer Lodge March 2 Kiwanis members and civic club performers entertained Monday evening with a musical program led by Miss Shirley Orman and Miss Susan Brenner. The event featured a variety of instruments and local participation, as a portion of the weekly civic activities.
Washington march 2 a former U S treasury official urged a healthy general income tax cut as an aid to revitalizing risk capital employment and production He warned against cuts only for upper brackets and cautioned the size should be under six and a half billion dollars while senators projected about four and a half to five billion dollars in relief
Deer Lodge officials approved the sale of a 40 acre hay land tract above the golf course. The city acquired the land from Deer Lodge Farms during airport development and regards it as having no value to the city. The council, led by Mayor Jens Hansen, also handled routine accounts and bills.
Federated Women will meet Wednesday at 2 30 o clock at the clubhouse with Mrs K W MacPherson as chairman to transact business of importance including officers. The city beautifying committee will direct the program. The date is March 2.
