President Eisenhower launched his bid for a second term targeting the Wisconsin and California primaries amid health and running mate debates. He reaffirmed his fitness and readiness to serve under restrictions and a lighter schedule while signing papers to enter the Wisconsin and California primaries.
The Associated Press reports warming weather triggered avalanches across at least four western Montana slopes on Thursday. At least seven people narrowly avoided injury or death as three snowslides covered U. S. Highway 2.
J Hugo Aronson filed for Republican renomination to the Montana governorship. If he wins the June 5 primary and November general election, he would become the second Republican governor to serve two terms, following Sam C Ford. Aronson, nicknamed the Galloping Sweetie, announced after Eisenhower’s pledge for a second term. Washington The House voted 256 to 136 to authorize the 760 million dollar Upper Colorado River Project a five state effort rated second in nation for reclamation development. The plan faces conference with the Senate which favored a broader bill including Echo Park Dam.
Washington All Colorado Wyoming and Montana members backed the Upper Colorado River bill with Nebraska Republicans split. Democrats Aspinall Rogers Metcalf supported. Republicans Chenoweth Hill Flare Thompson Miller Weaver supported. Chase Harrison of Nebraska voted against the measure.
An Egyptian military spokesman said three Arab civilians were wounded Thursday during a six hour intermittent exchange of fire between Israeli and Egyptian border units at the Gaza frontier.
A Miles City mother, Mrs. James Abbott, 35, and her 5 year old daughter Jacqueline perished in a fire that destroyed their single story home near Miles City. Two teenage boys escaped, their mother outside reentering to save the child. Coroner Rudolph said both died of smoke inhalation, not fire. The fire, possibly from a water heater, broke out around 1 a.m. Firefighters arrived too late. it was Miles City’s first fatal blaze in years.
The United States protested to the Soviet Union that balloons have flown over U S territory, specifically Alaska, amid a dispute over weather balloons and alleged spying. Washington urged a UN weather cooperation program, demanded return of U S balloons, rejected Soviet proposals, and noted no U S figures on balloon counts.

The Montana Highway Department announces bids will be opened March 28 in Helena for 17 construction projects totaling 23.261 miles of seal coat oiling on roads including Whitehall streets and East road in Jefferson County plus Townsend to White Sulphur Springs in Broadwater and Meagher counties. Other projects cover Ravalli Park and Mineral counties with seal coat oiling and guard rail, and Sweet Grass County work on Mission overpass approaches and Big Timber West road. Cascade-Teton counties total 39.080 miles of seal coat oiling.
West Berlin announced to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights that East Germany has sentenced 30 citizens for urging others to defect to West Germany. Willy Brandt, Berlin Parliament president, called the sentences a flagrant violation of human rights, noting penalties from 22 years to life.
Henry Winston, last of the fugitive top leaders of American communism, announced he will surrender for imprisonment next Monday. He used the same approach as Gilbert Green who surrendered last week. Winston and Green had five year sentences for revolutionary conspiracy. the other two, Gus Hall and Robert G. Thompson, were later seized by the FBI.
Pope Pius XII marks his 80th birthday with a day of ceremonies in the Vatican. He will receive children from Italy and across nations, a medal presentation, and Mass at 7 am, noting a prior hoarseness that has since cleared.

The Butte Regional Science Fair opens Friday at the Butte Civic Center with 13 vocations represented by exhibitors from area high schools. Public viewing runs Friday 1 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Vocations include engineering fields, medicine, pharmacy, forestry and more. Judges and officials from Butte oversee nine competition divisions while winners advance to the Montana State Science Fair in Missoula March 23-24.
The Montana highway death toll for the year rose to 24, five days earlier the state posted its first traffic fatality in Valley County, a reported one legged pedestrian. Valley and Missoula counties now tie for the highest fatality count at five each, with Montana noting two four fatality crashes last year near Roundup and Havre.
