In a Washington incident, two men and a woman spectators shouted pro Puerto Rico messages and opened fire in the House gallery, wounding five representatives with two seriously hurt. The Puerto Rican trio and partner from New York City were overpowered and captured immediately.
In Bethesda a bipartisan group of lawmakers Davis and Jensen recover after a shooting in which Bentley Jensen Roberts Fallon and others were wounded. Puerto Rican Nationalist party members Lolita Lebron and associates were arrested at police HQ.
In Caracas the tenth Inter-American Conference opened with a strong denunciation of communism. Colombia’s Evaristo Lourdis urged hemispheric measures to curb subversive activity as J. Villarroel of Venezuela’s underground Communist party was reported jailed. Jai Narine Singh urged British Guiana independence or risk armed rebellion.
A federal court barred the Butte Labor Relations Board from holding or preparing any election among Anaconda Copper Mining Company employees in Butte. Judge McClernan had appointed a five member board Feb 16 to supervise miners votes, with a March 22 election planned for bargaining agent selection.
Benjamin F. Mitchell was arrested in Kellogg Idaho on a warrant for the February 21 Firestone Store burglary in Galena Wyoming. He admitted stealing a Cadillac from Firestone and a 21 inch TV and other items valued near $800, with rifles later recovered. Evidence tied him to Boulder and Elk Park Canyon links before his arrest.
Surveys at the Illinois Institute of Technology suggest laziness as a cause of underachievement for educated people with strong vocabularies who do not advance. The ad notes even lazy people succeed with want ads and includes a brief classified line offering a fireproof safe for $20 by phone.
Eleven year old Glen Sheron of Whittier School suffered severe frostbite after losing his oxfords in deep snow near Saddle Rock on the Continental Divide. Glen’s friends Larry Monson and Julius Olsen joined the trek and attempted to recover the footwear.
Civil Service Commission told Congress that 354 of 1,782 security separations last year involved individuals with subversive information in their files. Philip Young, commission chairman, presented the figures to House Civil Service Committee chair Rees. Excludes 211 Defense Department terminations and 231 resignations.
Prime Minister Nehru bitterly spurned Eisenhower's offer of arms aid to India, urging U.S. observers be removed from the U.N. Kashmir cease fire panel. He condemned the move as intervention, noting Pakistan received aid and India would not accept hypocrisy. The ruling party cheered as he warned of past Kashmir aggression.
In Khartoum 31 people including a British colonel and 17 police were killed as riots erupted over Egypt's restored President Mohamed Naguib. Over 100 injured. mass demonstrations halted the opening of Sudan's first parliament and a state of emergency was declared. 32 Umma leaders were arrested for questioning.
In the night a two car collision on Highway 93 south of Ronan killed Teresa Matt of St Ignatius and Henry Lorenzo of St Ignatius. Injured were four and five year old Shirley and Jean Matt. The car headed north toward Ronan. Slick roads blamed. Sheriff Beaudry and the FBI investigated.
San Francisco tow-truck driver Harry H Kampf examined a smashed Cadillac and confirmed the severity. He then realized the wrecked car was his own, stolen earlier and damaged before it was missed.
Sen McCarthy announced a postponed face to face talk with Secretary Stevens to review Army handling of alleged Communists. The session is expected closed with Stevens before the Senate Investigations Subcommittee possibly Thursday or next Monday.
Field men from the office of Joe Lester Silver Bow County assessor began their annual task of assessing houses real estate personal and other property in the county. Copies of assessments will be left with owners or mailed if needed and objections over amounts fixed may be corrected by the assessor's office upon notification.
The 1954 American Red Cross fund drive in Silver Bow County to aid local relief opens with a $20,395 goal. Emmett J. Buckley chairs the appeal, with W. J. McMahon presiding at the kickoff meeting of volunteer campaign workers at the Chamber of Commerce. Buckley cites Red Cross disaster work seen in floods and notes prior local successes and the need for community gifts.
The Senate confirmed President Eisenhower's nomination of Earl Warren as 14th Chief Justice by voice vote with about 40 senators present. Congressman Bent ley of Michigan one of five shot by Puerto Rican nationalists is described as in critical condition with a perforated lung stomach and possibly liver after an exploratory operation. Doctors say the operation was successful and he is in the hands of the Lord. He is 35 years old.
Secretary Benson and Secretary McKay canceled a planned Puerto Rico visit after five representatives were wounded Monday. An Interior Department official said arrival could trigger demonstrations on the island and the trip was deemed risky.
The forecast calls for a fair and cold day in Butte with increasing cloudiness Tuesday night. Wednesday will be cloudy with snow developing and high temperatures around 20. Temperatures range from 12 to 20 across the state with a cold night Tuesday and near 15 to 9 overnight Sunday to Monday. West of Divide to be mostly fair and cold Tuesday with highs 12 to 20. east of Divide partly cloudy and cold with snow possible in the mountains.
Reporters describe a wide involvement in capturing three Puerto Rican Nationalists after a gun attack in the House Chamber. Edward Adams, 14, and Lee Thomas, 21, helped detain suspects as others pursued and restrained the gunmen during the chaos in the Capitol corridors.
In Hartford Connecticut Pedro Orozco 24 was held for a federal grand jury on a charge of threatening to kill President Eisenhower He allegedly said he would kill the President while objects to fingerprinting in a non support case Bail was set at 15000 and the hearing led to a New Haven grand jury order Orozco denied making the threats.
