Ex Butte Family Is Liberated From Japanese Camp
Word reached Butte on Thursday of the release of a second former Butte family after three years in a Japanese camp in the Philippine islands. Mr and Mrs Paul A Schafer and two sons Paul E and David W were rescued with the return of American troops. The Schafer family previously lived in Butte where Paul Schafer taught geology at Montana School of Mines from 1931 to 1936 and later worked as a geologist for Balatoc Mining company on the islands. Sanford Ladic his wife and two daughters were also released after three years in Japanese imprisonment in the islands. Ladic, a Montana School of Mines alumnus, was a mining engineer.
