Helena March 1 The Montana Senate urged a thorough study by the Governor's committee on reorganization and economy of proposed water conservancy district legislation and sent the subject to the 28th Legislative Assembly in 1943. The body killed H B 267 for district creation, preferring a broader study.
In Tokyo on Sunday the failure of the French ambassador to meet Japanese Foreign Minister Matsuoka extended the crisis over Indo China mediation with Thailand. Ambassador Henry waited six hours for a conference that did not occur, fueling speculation of a postponed showdown and awaiting Vichy's final decision. Observers see Japan delaying forceful action while a peaceful settlement remains possible.
Helena March 1 Both houses of the Montana Legislature plan Sunday recesses for the first time in many sessions as sine die approaches. Senator Keeley claims the Senate set a national record with no Sunday sessions during the 27th Assembly. The 60 day limit looms Thursday with leaders predicting final work by Saturday and no clock stopping. Each branch has fewer than 20 bills left before Monday night’s amendment deadline.
In Helena on March 1 4 the Montana House rejected a proposal 62 to 28 to authorize a two year legislative investigation of alleged gambling violations. Rep. O Connor led the effort arguing widespread gambling while opponents said the probe would cost money and add little value. He urged lawmakers to challenge county officials and the attorney general and warned that defeating the measure would signal tacit approval of current conditions.
L. M. A. Wass, administrator of Montana’s state liquor commission, submitted his resignation effective at the pleasure of the liquor control board. A new two-member board appointed by Gov. Sam C. Ford will meet, with A. E. Mc Patridge and Fred Ward appointed to succeed Ben F. Moulton and J. A. Putnam. Over four years, Wass oversaw $11.844 million turned over to the state, including dividends and tax revenues.
Crowds flocked to the Silver Bow county treasurer George O’Brien Jr’s office Friday and Saturday as the 1940 license deadline approached. About 1,600 plates sold in the two day rush marked a new office record while more than 9,000 plates and 10,000 drivers permits have been issued this year. Fifty drivers were arrested Saturday and five patrolmen patrolled the highways that night against 1940 license violations.
In Washington March 1 the Senate debated the lease-land bill as foes warned Roosevelt could hand parts of the Navy to Britain. They attacked former envoy William C Bullitt for propaganda speeches and his remark that opponents suffer political dementia praecox. Senators Wheeler Tobey Lucas Tunnell Smathers spoke as administration leaders eyed longer sessions to push a final vote.
British fighter planes swept northern France on Saturday afternoon downing four German aircraft and returning unscathed. Overnight raids pounded Wilhelmshaven and Emden with large bombs and fires at docks, while targets in Holland and Lorient were hit. No British casualties were reported.
Robert J. McCollim an 18 year old Great Falls high school senior told Police Lieutenant Grady Saturday he killed his aunt Mrs. Arthur J. Moore during a quarrel. He was arrested about 3 pm ten miles from the city and later questioned by county officials. No charges yet. Mrs. Moore guardian to McCollim and wife of the First National bank assistant cashier. She survived by husband two brothers and a sister.
Work at the St. Lawrence mine is suspended after a hoist breakdown Saturday afternoon. Superintendent Edward E McGione of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company says repairs will take a few days before operations can resume.
The heat on gambling in Butte intensified as halls with two hours per day shut down at 10 pm. Authorities offered few details while locals blamed legislative focus and an attorney general report request, predicting the closures are likely temporary.

British sources said the Royal Air Force could bomb German troops in Sofia as in Wilhelmshaven, though no formal confirmation of German entry into Sofia was given. News of George W. Rendel’s departure was expected hourly, with warnings of possible British war on Bulgaria if German troops passed through.

Butte high school orchestra and band units totaling over 200 will present a combined concert at the high school auditorium under H J Schiesser. Montana's largest symphony orchestra and band will appear on the same program March 7 and 8 at 9:15 p m. The 80 piece symphony opens the program with the 120 strong band featured in the second half. The event follows the enthusiastic reception of last year’s inaugural concert.
