Russia Denounces U S Cable Break Naval Search

London reports the Soviet Union bitterly condemned the U S Navy actions aboard the Russian fishing vessel Vorovosisk off Newfoundland. Radio Moscow labeled the 70 minute patrol aboard the trawler a premiditated provocation and accused Washington of unlawful action as it suspected cable damage while Lt Donald Sheely said most likely the trawler may have cut the cables but could have been an accident.

Filipinos Detain Five Soviet Fishing Trawlers

In Cirique Inlet on Luzon’s northern coast five Soviet fishing vessels were detained by the Philippine navy after an engine failure and a call for repairs. The ships, which left the Baltic on Christmas Day, were held pending clearance from the Department of Foreign Affairs, per Defense Secretary Jesus Vargas.

Man shields guests from grenade at Glendale party

A live phosphorous grenade rolled into a Glendale apartment during a Saturday party. Guest Lloyd A. Wilson, 23, grabbed the device and leapt onto a couch to shield others, suffering severe burns and a six hour surgery. He may lose sight of one eye. Police seek the pin puller, noting the grenade was a Marine Corps smoke marker. Wilson and friends brought two grenades to the gathering.

U S Playwright Anderson Passes on at 70

Pulitzer winner Maxwell Anderson dies at 70 in Stamford Connecticut after a stroke at home. He was working on Madonna and Child at the time and had been partially paralyzed since the stroke. Survived by widow and three sons.

Five Navy Crewmen Killed in Prescott Crash

A Mil itary Air Transport Service C121G crashed near Prescott Arizona killing all five Navy crew aboard. The four engine plane bound for practice landings at Prescott Municipal Airport slammed into ground along Highway 89 four miles north of Prescott. Wreckage burned over rugged wooded terrain setting several trees ablaze. The aircraft belonged to Transport Squadron 7 at Moffett Naval Air Station California.

Mines Students Are Honored at Copper Bowl Luncheon

Melvin R. Bennett of Deer Lodge and Suzanne K. Dunlap of Butte, both Montana School of Mines students, received the Daughters of American Colonists Bannock Chapter American History excellence awards at a semi annual luncheon in the Copper Bowl, Finlen Hotel. Bennett, son of Roy J. Bennett, starred in high school sports and graduated in 1954. Dunlap is completing her second year.

Anderson Rules On Veto Power

Helena AP report states the attorney general’s opinion holds the governor lacks veto power over constitutional amendments the Legislature places on ballots. The measure to create a Montana University System Board of Regents would go to the secretary of state for the November 1960 ballot. Senate Bill 7 passed both chambers with two thirds support. Snowplane Races Set March 8

Jackson hosts the annual national snowplane races at the Snow Bowl between Jackson and Wisdom on March 8 at 1 p.m. Ideal snow and a fast track are expected as Snowplane Assn officials finalize plans. Races are in classes A B and C with dash and oval events and a championship for the top four finishers in each class.
