The Agriculture Department warned the world food shortage may last at least two more years and urged farmers to plant 71.7 million acres of wheat for 1947. Government figures project a 1.033 billion bushel wheat crop this year, with a one-billion-bushel possibility next year, while price supports and ever-normal granary programs stay in place.
Roving armed gangs clashed with Poland security forces as unrest grew on the eve of a nationwide referendum on legislative reform and nationalization of key industries. A foreign ministry spokesman said gangs have wounded and killed hundreds, with officials noting thousands killed in ten months.

Helena June 29 Capt James E Van Zandt Navy civil affairs officer and Pennsylvan ia Republican nominee urged organized veterans at the 24th annual VFW state encampment banquet to press for an adequately armed America. He called Congress to back vigorous appropriations for a balanced defense fit for the atomic age. The veterans plan to end the encampment at a large gathering.
After weeks of work by over 100 volunteers, Butte plans a large Fourth of July celebration starting July 3 with a free 9 pm dance at the Masonic temple. A 10 am parade opens activities, a 2 pm baseball game at Clark Park, and a 7 pm program at Naranche Memorial Stadium with band performances by the Butte Mines band. Mayor Barry O’Leary leads the committee urging nearby communities to join in.
