Great bargains fill Butte during Krazy Daze as merchants join in the Fourth of July celebration. The program opens Friday at 8 30 with a city hall costume contest judged by clerks from various stores. Music accompanies the judging and stores across town offer deep discounts on items from babies bottles to slippers and furniture.
Montana's 1962 traffic toll climbs to 92 with the death in a Missoula hospital of a 12 year old boy injured Sunday when struck by a car near Ravalli. The victim, Mike Craft of Molese, was fishing near Ravalli when hit while crossing U S 93. Police report the driver was John S Barnaby of St Ignatius as authorities file the incident.
State Examiner Albert E. Leuthold accused Silver Bow County of lawless order and insolvency after a special audit covering April 1 to June 19, 1962. He urged County Attorney Robert J. Holland to prosecute misconduct in office and warned that funds were illegally moved and authorities exceeded powers. Copies went to governor and attorney general.
Three Butte sanitation department workers were trapped in a 15 foot ditch cavern on Sheridan street and rescued using mining methods. Harold Konen Edward Picard and Emmett Malone survived with varying injuries and were hospitalized at Silver Bow General.
Three boys from Butte and Great Falls overpowered a state employe taking them to Miles City from Great Falls. The 18 plus youths fled in a bright yellow state car on U.S. 12, handcuffed and leg irons used, as police issued all points bulletins. The escape occurred near Dead Man’s Basin with the employee roughed but not badly hurt.
