SAN FRANCISCO June 26 Trygve Lie secretary general of the United Nations declared that failure of the big powers to settle differences would bring catastrophic consequences for the United Nations. He urged willingness to compromise among the five permanent Security Council members as the foundation of the charter and emphasized that agreement is absolutely necessary for peace and the UN's survival. He acknowledged criticism and pessimism but expressed confidence that agreements and compromises will come, recalling the San Francisco meeting a year ago and the shared conviction that war must be avoided. He discussed the veto power and the permanents as essential to prevent disaster.

Five Are Killed in Plane Crash Near Concord California
A private cabin plane carrying prominent west coast promoter William H. Linn, his eight year old son Billy, Mrs Dorothy Fowler 34 of Berkeley, and Foster W Weeks of Alameda crashed near Concord after catching fire in mid air. The fifth victim’s identity was uncertain. The crash occurred at 500 feet altitude near Buchanan Airport, about 25 miles from San Francisco.
