Gallatin County Sheriff L D W Anderson said a girl reportedly disappeared after 2 am Monday with strong indications of kidnapping. Volunteers and tracking dogs combed the area in a meticulous “foot by foot” search as night fell. The child’s father William Jaeger of Farmington Michigan reported the disappearance at 4 30 am.
Former White House counsel John W. Dean III testified for over six hours to the Senate committee, reading a 245 page statement detailing a widened Watergate web. He implicated many aides and suggested Nixon may have been unaware of the full implications.
Cloudy with showers over mountains and continued warm conditions. Local forecast shows temperatures near 80 during the day and 46 at night with a weather map on Page 11.
The Supreme Court ruled 6 3 that state aid through tuition reimbursement and tax deductions for parents sending children to parochial and other nonpublic schools violates the First Amendment. The decision ends Nixon administration efforts for a federal tax credit for private school parents and upholds the Hatch Act as constitutional, a 6 3 ruling with White and Stewart joining Nixon appointees. The dissenting justices were Douglas Brennan and Marshall.
A three judge federal panel heard a class action challenging Montana's one year residency requirement to file for divorce. Beverly May Allen argues the rule violates equal protection and access to courts. Assistant AG John Connor warned striking it would flood Montana courts. Allen's case, filed via Missoula-Mineral County Legal Services, seeks a constitutional ruling. Judges Browning, Smith, and Battin presided as arguments were heard.
District Court Judge James D. Freebourn of Butte faces a July 9 hearing before the Montana Supreme Court to justify his ruling on evidence in the December 3 1972 shooting death of Thomas E. Holly and to explain why a transcript was not prepared. The court stayed all Holmes proceedings and will decide if supervisory action is warranted.

The School District 1 Board of Trustees deferred action on the $8.73 million preliminary budget for 1973 74 until Friday. They approved salary raises for key administrators, including a substantial raise for Bill Milligan, director of administrative services, after Trustee Jack Schara moved to increase Milligan s pay.
Montana advisory council on Vocational Education urged a more comprehensive plan and warned a mere compliance plan risks federal funds. Linda Skarr said the current plan is not adequate or flexible for Montana’s small population and workforce, calling for periodic evaluation and realistic budgets with clear implementation. The public hearing drew little interest as questions about council-administration cooperation remained unresolved.
Washington AP report says Nixon economic advisers worry about food shortages and potential need to ease the price freeze on some foods, notably broiler chickens, after hearing horror stories of producers killing stock or withholding supply. The council members say they are investigating actions to be taken.
The House opened debate on a Foreign Affairs Committee bill to end presidentially initiated hostilities in 120 days unless Congress authorizes continuation. Some members call for correcting a balance in warmaking powers, while others warn Congress should not reverse a president’s hostilities by inaction.
Rep. Paul N. McCloskey urged an immediate inquiry into impeaching the President. He said the May 22 statement shows a plan to burglarize foreign high priority secrets, granting FBI and intelligence agencies authority to conduct illegal and unconstitutional acts, violating the Fourth Amendment.
Washington AP reports as John W. Dean testified the Senate by voice vote doubled to 1 million dollars the money authorized for committee expenses. Sen. Ervin said the request had unanimous support of the seven members after February had approved 500000 for the panel.
Sen. William B. Saxbe introduced a bill urging Congress to declare a national emergency and create a White House National Energy Coordinator. The appointed czar would craft a comprehensive national energy policy and serve with Senate confirmation.
