Montana Regents Near 600000 Contingency Fund For Tech Degrees

Montana lawmakers approved a 600000 contingency fund to finance liberal arts and environmental engineering programs at Montana Tech. The fund, dubbed the regents slush fund, was pared and restored through a House Senate compromise. Rep Jack Healy and Rep J D Lynch supported preserving the full 600000 level for Tech.

McLeod to head Montana Tech

Dr. Kenneth McLeod named acting president of Montana Tech by the Montana Board of Regents to succeed the retiring E. G. Koch. A Butte native and long-time Tech administrator, McLeod plans a short acting tenure and will present for history and English degree expansion at the July 12 regents meeting.

President Nixon addressed about 3,000 delegates at a joint conference of the National Retired Teachers Association and American Association of Retired Persons. He vowed to reform nursing homes end tax discrimination and bridge the generation gap, saying the elderly should be valued. Government rests case in Butte Partin trial

The government concluded its case in chief against Edward Grady Partin but did not formally rest due to chief counsel’s absence. Witness W O Bergeron testified about being shot during an armed 1968 Plaquemine attack by men later identified as Teamsters. Bergeron described returning fire in self defense. Previous testimony placed Partin as a strong-arm man for the Teamsters Local 5 in Baton Rouge.

Supreme Court weighs publication ban on Times and Post

The Supreme Court agreed to hear a government bid to stop The Washington Post and The New York Times from publishing more of a classified Pentagon Vietnam study. In a 5-4 ruling the justices prohibited the papers from printing any classified material in the interim, despite ongoing government objections.

Republicans cry foul over funds to governor office and OEO

Two Republican representatives Forester and Ulmer charged that general tax funds supported the governor's office and the Office of Economic Opportunity amid a compromise funding plan. They claimed OEO personnel engaged in blatant political activity possibly violating the Hatch Act, citing connections to Democratic figures and anti tax campaigns. The House approved the compromise 51-33 and the Senate 34-2.
