President Truman orders three committees to study the effects of the foreign aid program on the United States. He cites grave concern and notes that while abroad production recovery supports democracy and peace, the proper level of continued aid requires careful study. A major committee is named.
Senate Republicans name Senator Ball to head watchdog committee for the Taft-Hartley labor bill as they push to override President Truman's veto Monday. Taft says the panel will study operation of the new law and suggest revisions next January if needed. House already passed the measure.
Four ballots showed 331 to 83 in favor as the measure reached today’s vote. A Senate approval would implement wide revisions to the Wagner labor relations act dating from early Roosevelt years. Provisions ban the closed shop jurisdictional strikes secondary boycotts foremen bargaining unions and union controlled funds. It also covers national paralysis strikes suits against unions union fees and free speech for employers.
Severe weather marks the first day of summer as floods tornadoes and an earthquake strike multiple regions. At least 16 people are reported killed with 50 missing including ten dead and many missing in Cambridge Nebraska where flash floods trapped residents in beds and caused extensive damage.
Reports describe three deaths and multiple injuries from blizzards marooning visitors in the Yellowstone Park region. Rescue teams race to reach isolated areas as weather complicates aid and communications.
Butte high school history teacher Miss Margaret Mullane died suddenly in New York City from a heart attack while on summer vacation visiting relatives. A native of Butte and graduate of Butte High and Montana State University, she lived at 732 West Granite and was active in the Teachers union Kappa Delta Daughters of Isabella and St Patrick parish. Surviving relatives include her father Michael Mullane of Butte brother William Mullane two sisters and their husbands B Harrington and R EF McCarthy of Helena and nieces and nephews Michael Shiela Ann Harrington McCarthy.
Reading of the ministerial appointments by Bishop Wilber F E Hammaker closed the Montana Conference of the Methodist church. The bishop spoke on temperance and delivered an address on immortality. Rev Reuben Dutton was named district superintendent of the Yellowstone park district with several pastors listed for surrounding areas. Continued on Page 5 Col 3.
In Wisconsin 1948 presidential preference delegates count shows Gov. Thomas E. Dewey with 321 first choices, 10 months before the primary. Gen. Douglas MacArthur places third with 157 votes, trailing Stassen by 35 and other leaders Taft Bricker and Van denberg.
Beverly Hills report on the unsolved murder of Bugsy Siegel 42 a kingpin in the west coast gambling world. Investigators from Las Vegas to Beverly Hills pursue last actions at the Flamingo club and his Friday night death, while police plan a coordinated briefing.
G J Rowe a Luck Wisconsin school principal said calm thinking prevented greater loss of life during a sudden blizzard that marooned summer tourists on the Beartooth Pass near Yellowstone. Rowe his wife and three children were stranded for hours as 70 to 75 mph winds drove fresh snow. They joined seven or eight other cars huddled beneath one blanket for warmth until a rescue truck could move out toward Red Lodge.
Snow plows moved toward Beartooth pass on the Montana Wyoming border after a blizzard that killed at least three, injured others and trapped many motorists. Bodies of three park road camp workers were found in a truck buried by 15 feet of snow as rescuers raced to clear 40 miles of highway and account for stranded tourists.

Two couples died and eight others injured in a head on collision on the Butte Dillon highway about 19 miles south of the mining city at 8:50 PM Sunday. Mrs Audrey Tomich and Mrs Marie Higginbotham died at the scene and three others were listed in critical condition. The Tomich and Higginbotham parties were en route to the Big Hole fishing trip when the smashup occurred.
Police in Rome and across Italy and Sicily arrested Giuseppe Pizzirani, former Rome Fascist boss, and hundreds of sympathizers in long planned raids. Officers seized arms and identities at a secret meeting in Piazza Colonna, linking to war criminals sought since the war. Authorities warned of a renewed Fascist movement.
Bradford Washburn led the 12 member expedition to Mount McKinley 20300 feet in Alaska returning after three months. They carried equipment food and scientific gear making five trips up and down to relay supplies and recording a cosmic ray photos. Temperatures ranged from 29 below to five below with all in good health and sub zero tans noted.
Rescue teams renewed the hunt in the Clark fork of the Columbia River near the Montana Idaho boundary for four people believed drowned when their car left a mountain road and plunged 150 feet into the river. Missing are Harold White of Walla Walla Washington Mr and Mrs Henry Gable of Smelterville Idaho and Mrs Elsie Silva of Denver. A car fragment was found near a bridge and the river bottom and a pocketbook aided identification. Patrolmen and sheriffs officers used grappling hooks as they searched the swift swollen gorge.
London reports the Soviet Union will attend a three foreign ministers conference to discuss Secretary of State Marshall's postwar plan. Tass quoted says Moscow accepts the proposal and may meet in Paris June 27. Pravda endorses cooperation with nations regardless of economic systems and urges US aid for European recovery.
The body of Norma Burton, 30, a Vancouver housewife, was found strangled near Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park. Police, led by Inspector C W Spence, would conduct autopsy Monday and would not disclose suspects or marks on the body. The husband, John Burton, an electrician, offered no comment beyond seeking reasons for such a crime.
The death of five year old Phyllis Petticrew followed injuries from a Thursday afternoon truck strike in Polson. Sheriff Coroner Wallace Beaudry and Police Chief Joe Ferrell absolved construction supervisor Matthew Gordon of blame, calling the incident unavoidable after the chief noted the girl darted into the street.
The silver jubilee session at Finlen hotel marked the conclave of the Montana Federation of Business and Professional Women. Lewistown was chosen as the 1948 convention city and Kalispell, Butte, Glendive, and Red Lodge earned top placements in publicity scrap-booking. The event featured an emblem breakfast, ritualistic ceremony, memorial service led by Frances Hopper, and a tour of Butte for out-of-town delegates.
