Fifth War Loan officials highlighted three types of short term securities dated June 26 and urged early orders to earn interest from that date. Butte retailers led a $23 564.40 daily push raising the county total to $737 378.75 toward a $2 650 000 quota.
German radio relayed from Tokyo that Americans are landing fresh troops and heavy guns on Saipan. Tokyo said U S forces advance under bomber cover and that Japanese tanks were landed in the rear of U S troops while coastal batteries on Tinian bombarded American concentrations.
Pfc Edward Sivula son of Mr and Mrs Victor Sivula of 459 East Broadway is reported missing in action on Biak Island in the south Pacific. The War department telegram says he has been missing since May 28 after enlisting June 24 1941 and serving over 26 months overseas with the field artillery.
Guatemala announces suspension of five constitutional articles including rights to public assembly freedom of speech and press due to unrest caused by Nazi Fascist agitation. The proclamation signed by President Jorge Ubico was read in the streets by soldiers and also suspends safeguards against arrest without warrant and protection of correspondence.
At the Chicago convention Taft led a resolutions committee hearing to craft a foreign policy plank. Senator Warren Austin chairs the subcommittee to reconcile East and Midwest views. Dewey and Bricker are cited as influential figures shaping the draft on international action.
A surface air line explosion at the Leonard mine sent the night shift home Thursday. Repair crews expect to finish by Friday morning and the day shift will be advised by calling the timekeeper at No. 4311 after 6 am. No injuries were reported and damage was not extensive. The cause remains undetermined.
Admiral Nimitz reports massive naval action west of the Marianas with at least 14 Japanese ships sunk or damaged and up to 373 planes destroyed. Carrier-borne air power from Task Force 58 handily routed the enemy in the second phase, while American losses total 49 planes.
American troops on Saipan advanced more than a mile in several sectors aided by air and naval bombardment. Half the Nafutan front force was wiped out as Americans seized Nafutan heights. enemy air raids near transports caused no damage and shore batteries were quickly knocked out.
Congress finished action on most appropriation measures and moves to a recess until August 1. The War department supply bill for 1945 faced a late delay, but five other funding bills advanced to President Roosevelt, including UNRRA and FEPC related items.
Eighth Army troops push 14 miles along the Adriatic coast capturing Fermo 84 miles below Rimini as Allied forces report gains on central and Tyrrhenian sectors. French Fifth Army moves southwest of Lake Trasimeno while Americans advance on Highway 1 toward Grosseto. Pedaso is occupied and Italian corps fight with Eighth Army near the coast.
Treasury reports individuals bought 1.127 billion in war bonds by the ninth day of the Fifth War Loan. This amount exceeds twenty percent of the 6 billion individual quota within a 16 billion total goal.
Chicago reports R. C. Pollock, general manager of the National Livestock and Meat Board, said on Thursday that 1944 meat production would exceed 1943 by more than a billion pounds due to wartime output steps up to a level never before equalled in history.

Allied dispatch reports American troops launched a massive assault on Cherbourg after heavy bombardment by guns and more than 1,000 planes. Lt Gen Omar Bradley’s forces pressed along the Cherbourg coast, trapping defenders in a 30 square mile area and closing in from the north and east.
Allied forces unleashed a coordinated strike with more than 1,000 American bombers and 1,150 tons of bombs against Cherbourg while three allied air task forces of over 1,000 heavy bombers hammered Calais, northern Italy targets, and ground troops closed in on the port as German resistance deteriorates and Cherbourg's fall nears.
In Great Falls on June 22 Oren O’Neill aged 15 and Kenneth Arrins 16 hike with a family dog left behind. Check a black and white Cocker Spaniel intercepted a rattler striking the dog’s nose as the boys watched. The dog died. the boys killed the snake in grief and anger.
Moscow reports Soviet forces killed about 2,700 Finnish soldiers in heavy combat on three fronts near Lake Onega and the Svir river. Units advanced toward Lake Ostero, captured Podporozhye, and pushed toward Lappeenranta to sever Finnish lines of communications with Viipuri and Helsinki.
Allied headquarters report heavy Fifth Air Force raids on Noemfoor near Biak with attacks on Kamiri airdrome supply areas. Geelvink bay barges sunk by PT boats. Biak mopping up continues with Borokoe and Sorido airstrips likely repaired. Cargo vessel sunk near Palau. Dublin island Truk raid noted. Rabaul air offensive persists.
