Freight train crashes and fires rage as Butte residents brag about the Mining City. Columbia Gardens stands as the state’s only amusement park drawing crowds to the park and recreation area, with warm weather and Thursday Children’s Day boosting attendance.
A Toledo Peoria and Western freight train derailed in Crescent City Illinois at 5 45 a m releasing compressed propane gas causing explosions and fires that leveled about one third of town and destroyed half the business district. About 70 people mainly firefighters were injured. seven hospitalized. Residents were evacuated and utilities disrupted as authorities fought the flames and evacuated witnesses.
Federal agents arrested 123 people and shot two who resisted during weekend raids in 10 cities targeting an alleged narcotics ring. The operation Iron Eagle seized about 33 cocaine and heroin, with a wholesale value near 259000 dollars. Two wounded suspects, Allan Eric Rudd-Marrero and Esteban Mendoza Orama, were identified by officials.

A Chicago AMA session on consumer groups’ view of medical care became a heated dispute. Groups accused the AMA of racial discrimination and questioned unethical practices in denying care to the uninsured. About 250 attendees heard Dr. Malcolm Todd open the session calling it a noble experiment.
A seven man military court found Peter A. Schwarz of Weirton West Virginia guilty of 12 counts of premeditated murder in the Son Thang killings near Da Nang. He received hard labor complete with dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay. Schwarz claimed no intent to kill amid testimony of four Marines facing trials.
