German powers press France for a clear yes or no on peace terms amid rising tensions. British air raids return fire on Berlin as London reports waves of German bombers and widespread alerts forcing residents into shelters. Three civilians die in a Suffolk house blast during raids.
Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler U S M C retired died at Naval hospital after four weeks illness. He had upper abdominal condition affecting gall bladder and liver. Family at bedside included Mrs Butler and daughter Mrs John Wehle. Butler lived in Newtown Square Pa and had two sons Smedley Butler Jr and Thomas Richard Butler. Born July 30 1881 in West Chester Pa he rose to public safety director in Philadelphia and Marine Corps officer.
Compiegne forest meeting yields a demand for an unconditional yes or no from France to Hitler’s conqueror’s peace terms. Emissaries stay in telephone contact with Paris as Berlin orders removal of the armistice car and tablet from 1918 and insists resistance end and guarantees for a new European order.
The Senate passed by voice vote a House approved bill to speed the naval expansion program and bar sale of essential war equipment to Great Britain. An anti sale clause by Sen. David I Walsh requires Army or Navy gear to be certified surplus before any sale.

In Tallinn, June 21, armed Estonian workers seized the government building and raised the red hammer and sickle under Russian protection. Tallinn Castle was taken at 6:30 p.m. with clashes reported but no injuries. Dr. Johannis Vares named premier of the new revolutionary government amid Russia’s influence.
