In Algiers a military backed coup overthrows President Ahmed Ben Bella before dawn. Col. Houari Boumedienne emerges as leader of a revolutionary council vowing action for treason and promising a new direction for Algeria's government.
Dominican crisis sides accept the OAS peace formula as a basis for negotiations with leaders Barrera and Aristy noting vague details. The plan calls for elections in six to nine weeks and will be studied before formal relief is issued. The Vatican and public leaders are aiding wider support for the settlement.
Brown clocks 13 40 2 to set a new NCAA mark in the three mile at Montana's double champion Thursday. First Montana title since 1950 when Dick Doyle won the discus. For pictures and full story see today’s Sports Green.
Howard L Williams aged 44 of Pelican Rapids Minnesota died early Saturday after a semi trailer jackknifed near Victor on US 93. The lumber laden truck left the road then returned and struck the pavement with Williams dying of head and neck injuries. The accident occurred about 2 am two miles north of Victor. Williams was southbound to Darby with a full load of lumber. Gerald Evanson owned the truck. it was leased to Myron Sammons of Missoula. Damages were estimated at 700 dollars. This is the 103rd Montana traffic death this year, down from 110 at similar point last year.
President Johnson declared Colorado a major disaster area after floods, with 28 of 68 counties eligible for federal aid and emergency assistance. Survey teams will assess damage and determine needed funds. Governor John A. Love requested aid.
Senator Lee Metcalf spoke to about 350 delegates at the 9th annual AFL-CIO convention banquet in the Finlen Hotel. He urged repeal of Taft-Hartley Section 14(b) and highlighted proposed changes to unemployment compensation and minimum wage protections while noting Montana's right-to-work issue persists. The event closed a three day gathering with new officers and several incumbents reelected.

The Arkansas River flood swept into western Kansas bringing the worst flooding on record across the Great Plains from Montana to New Mexico. Eighteen deaths are confirmed with fears of a higher toll as rescuers reach isolated areas. Colorado reports 10 deaths, Kansas 1, Wyoming 3, New Mexico 2, Montana unspecified.
