Robert Michael Jones, 12, died when a family home at 2406 Wall burned early Tuesday. His brother Thomas, 14, was reported in fair condition at St. James Community Hospital.
Partly cloudy through Thursday with possible afternoon or early evening rain and thundershowers. Temperatures near 78 today and 48 tonight. Showers 40 percent today, 30 percent tonight. In a separate report, Robert Jones was found dead in a closet. coroner says asphyxiation from smoke inhalation caused the death. Brother Steve escaped. Thomas Jones aided by Ellsworth Hoffenbacker. The victim showed serious effects but slight improvement later. no burn injuries beyond a wrist abrasion.
Tens of thousands are expected to converge on Washington for the Poor People’s Campaign march to press for ending poverty and violence. A clash near the White House marred the eve as the King family and Rev. Abernathy predicted a large turnout and nonviolent support.
Washington report says the administration's gun control bill won decisive Senate backing after a Judicial subcommittee endorsed a mail order rifle and shotgun ban. With Republicans shifting to support, the Senate was poised to approve Johnson's proposal following Senator Kennedy's assassination.
In New York primary action, Eugene H. Nickerson led Paul O'Dwyer by a narrow margin for the Democratic Senate nomination over Joseph Resnick as votes were tallied with 6,797 of 13,408 districts reporting. O'Dwyer surged while Nickerson held a small lead over Resnick in the contest to oppose Javits.
Washington AP reports the proposed 10 percent income surtax set to expire June 30, 1969 may need extending. House Ways and Means chair Wilbur Mills warned Congress faces a heavy deficit outlook and a $6 billion cut. failure to slash could force President Johnson to curb expenditures. The Rules Committee cleared the bill for a five hour debate.
In Montana the 1966 governor race shows Tim Babcock Forrest Anderson and running mates spent 129507. Primary totals show Babcock and Ted James at 59439 and Anderson and Eugene Mahoney at 70068. Club contributions reached 48163 for Anderson and 21728 for Mahoney.
Thomas M. Connolly a former Anaconda Co. tax agent and county aide credited with helping Silver Bow County emerge from nearly half a million dollars in debt died Tuesday of an apparent heart attack. He was 46 and had been with the county since 1963, assisting as insolvency issues pressed banks to cash warrants. His family home is in Butte.
Army Pfc. Harold Lockwood, son of Mr and Mrs William T Lockwood of Troy Montana, was killed in action in Vietnam, the Defense Department said Tuesday.
The Associated Press survey tallies 35 firearm deaths in the United States since midnight Sunday. Twenty two were homicides, twelve suicides, and one accidental killing. The count runs through Sunday, June 23, prompting discussions on gun control legislation.
In Helena AP dispatch Arnold Olsen spent 22754 dollars to win the Democratic nomination for a fifth term in Congress. He faced Dick Smiley the Republican opponent this fall. Olsen lists contributions totaling 21200 dollars including many named donors from Montana Washington New York and abroad.
Rep. Carl Albert named permanent chairman for the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago set to begin August 26 with Sen. Daniel Inouye as temporary chair and keynote speaker. Hale Boggs to head the resolutions committee, Samuel Shapiro chairs the rules panel, Richard Hughes leads credentials, and John McCormack given honorary chairman role.
