Johnson names Richard Helms CIA chief after Raborn exit
President Johnson announced Richard M. Helms as director of the Central Intelligence Agency succeeding Adm. William Raborn who resigned after less than 14 months. Helms, a 53 year old career CIA employee, would be the first to head the agency from within its ranks. Senate approval was expected with strong backing from Sen. Richard Russell who chairs the CIA oversight subcommittee. Raborn had agreed to serve a limited time after returning from retirement and Helms would likely have a military deputy once confirmed.

Thieves likely used a large truck and entry was not forced. occupants may have been locked in the building.

More than 1,200 Butte boys and girls begin summer school Monday in reading and math under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The $131,178 federal fund project involves 80 teachers, two librarians, four guidance counselors, one special reading instructor and one speech therapist.
