John Pfeiffer Jr., a 49 year old Dupuyer area rancher, died after his car crashed into a bridge on U S Highway 89 north of Dupuyer. The vehicle left the road at high speed, sheared off part of the bridge, and plunged into Sheep Creek sixty feet below. Pfeiffer was the 101st Montana traffic fatality this year.
John Cyril Hellman 34 of Butte pleaded innocent to a federal grand jury indictment charging membership in the Communist Party of the United States from 1947 to the filing of the indictment. The defense sought dismissal arguing the Smith Act exceeds Congress authority and violates the Constitution. The judge continued bond and planned a possible trial date in July.
The United Steelworkers wage policy committee authorized negotiators to call a strike in the 650000-man steel industry if no contract is reached by June 30. They labeled the Big Three offer as a take it or leave it ultimatum and unlikely to gain good faith. President David J. McDonald disputed the value of the five year package.

Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser raised the Egyptian flag over the Suez Canal Zone in Port Said as Egypt formally assumes guardianship of the life line between east and west. The three day national celebration marks Britain's withdrawal of troops after 73 years.
In Jerusalem Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion told the Knesset he asked Golda Meirson to become foreign minister, succeeding Moshe Sharett who plans to resign after a clash over defense policy. Meirson, born in Russia, has served as labor minister since 1949, and Sharett announced his irrevocable decision to quit.
In the Troodos Mountains on Cyprus a forest fire killed nineteen British soldiers of a 2,000 man force during an operation to capture rebel chief Grivas. Eighteen were wounded, and the fire's cause remains undetermined though wind shifts and flaming petrol tanks contributed. The campaign targets Grivas and his Cypriot rebels, with a 28 thousand dollar price on Grivas' head.
Jesuit leader Father Francis E. Corkery president of Gonzaga University told a Butte Anaconda Gonzaga alumni dinner the major problem is keeping topflight teachers in classrooms. He spoke on the Great Teacher Program and noted salary competition with industry limits education’s ability to attract staff.
At Annapolis the President's Conference on Fitness of American Youth opened with Vice President Nixon revealing President Eisenhower should soon be fit to carry on duties. Delegates from sport and education groups seek ways to promote youth fitness to improve health and reduce juvenile delinquency. Nixon urged more recreation facilities and parental awareness of physical fitness.
Lee C. Colston won a ninth consecutive two year term as chairman of the Silver Bow County Republican Central Committee. Mrs. William Nance named vice chairwoman and Guy Pratt secretary treasurer. Other officers named include Dr. R. C. Monahan committeeman and Mrs. Richard Ranta committeewoman. Delegates to the state Republican meeting in Helena listed, with alternates named, as the party urged election of its candidates led by Montana attorney general hopeful Michael J. O’Connell.
Former Colorado Farmers Home Administration official Floyd Higbee testified before the Senate Civil Service Committee that top state FHA jobs are political and were designed to be political. Higbee recounted firings dating from 1954 and described drinking incidents involving McLeaish, with Kathryn Carter corroborating related conduct at a Montana FHA convention.
In Cleveland on Monday Defense Dept missile chief E. V. Murphree said the Navy Petrel and Air Force Rascal will allow bombers to deliver heavy payloads beyond their own range without entering enemy air defenses. The programs aim to extend striking power while reducing exposure for bombers.
Washington The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a $4.502 billion foreign aid bill for 1956 57 but urged a review of the program aiding U S allies. The authorization would allocate about $2.6 billion for military aid and $1.902 billion for economic aid. The panel backed a total higher than the House but shy of Eisenhower’s request.
William H. Durham of Missoula was elected president of the Montana State Pharmaceutical Assn during its 65th annual convention in Butte. Eugene Barsness of Laurel was the outgoing president. The banquet and dance closed the event at the Butte Country Club with Bourke MacDonald as toastmaster. 150 pharmacists and guests attended. Other officers named include William Fitzgerald, James Murphy, and R. C. Dean, with directors Russell Cook and Merle Thompson. Barsness remains on the board for one year.
The Montana forecast shows east areas fair then increasing clouds and warmth with Tuesday highs 80 to 90 and scattered showers and storms spreading westward by Tuesday night. West Montana expects more cloudiness and afternoon storms with highs 75 to 80 and cooler conditions Wednesday.
Senate Appropriations Committee advances a defense bill adding 800 million for aircraft procurement and 116 million total to the armed forces. Final tally 13-12 after Sen. Magnuson voted yes from a dentist chair. Bill totals 790.884 million above administration request. House already cut 33.635 billion. Senate aims for floor vote next Thursday.
Frankfort attorney and adviser Joseph J. Leary, 49, of Frankfort was named United States senator from Kentucky by Governor A. B. Chandler to serve until the November election to fill the late Barkley’s term.
